Canon Collins Trust
Canon Collins Trust is an educational and legal assistance trust fund that offers scholarships for Southern Africa Nationals to study masters programs in some accredited universities that work in partnership with the Canon Collins Trust in the United Kingdom. The trust has been in existence for over 30 years and counting and it has succeeded in empowering thousands of individuals who now make strong contributions through NGOs, businesses, government, etc to the future growth of their communities.
The Canon Collins Trust scholarship is targeted at southern African applicants and it aims at building various human resources for economic, cultural and social development. The scholarship holders are trained to develop an educated and skilled workforce that helps their various home countries. The Canon Collins Trust scholarships are available for only masters and postgraduate courses.
Scholarship for postgraduate study:
This particular type of scholarship is available to applicants in South Africa. The scholarships are offered mainly to those who wish to study in these three areas:
- Justice that is; Law, Economics, Politics and the Environment
- Education and Humanities: which includes Literature, History, Anthropology and the Arts.
Other applicants who wish to study other courses not in these categories are outrightly rejected.
Scholarship for Masters Study:
Canon Collins partners with some universities in the United Kingdom and these schools are; the University of Sussex, University of Edinburgh, University of London; School of Oriental and African Studies. The Trust partners with the Mandela Scholarship Fund at the University of Sussex to fund the awards given annually to the awarded applicants. In like manner, the University of Edinburgh, also partners with the Canon Collins Trust scholarship to award the scholarships to deserved applicants. The only course available for this scholarship is the MSc in African Studies which is offered and sponsored.
It is worthy of note that, the Canon Collins Trust scholarship is awarded to applicants who already have been offered admission to one of the universities that works in conjunction with the Canon Collins Trust that is, the applicants must apply separately to the university of choice and the Canon Collins scholarship would be awarded upon confirmation that the applicants have been offered admission to any of the universities that supports the Canon Collins scholarship trust. If an applicant successfully gets awarded the scholarship but fails to get an admission to study a master’s course in the university, then the scholarship is automatically revoked from such an applicant.
The Canon Collins Trust offers up to 5 awards annually to deserving applicants who meet all the criteria needed for registration. On the course of filling the application form online, which is done on the Canon Collins Trust website, the applicants will be asked to demonstrate how they have been able to develop their leadership expertise or skills in their various workplaces, their academic environment or in their personal lifestyle. It is worthy of note, that priority will be given to those who can describe ways in which they have used their various skills to build strategic relationships and networks.
The Canon Collins Trust scholarship is available to Nationals of some African countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Malawi, Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Lesotho, and Swaziland. Other eligibility criteria include:
- The applicant must have a good honors degree from a prestigious university, with a minimum of second class upper or upper credit.
- The applicant must be normally resident in southern Africa or have refugee status.
- The applicant must have 2 years of relevant work experience.
- The applicant must have good leadership qualities which must be relevant to the course of study.
- The applicant must be applying for a full-time course in any of the courses been taught at the University of choice.
Note: The selection criteria of the Canon Collins Trust is centered mainly on academic merit and the full potential of the selected applicants to contribute to the growth, development, and prosperity of Southern Africa. The Canon Collins trust favors applicants who clearly show a desire to be part of the future and prosperity of southern Africa and is also ready to contribute to the future of their respective home countries.

Canon Collins Trust scholarship comes with a lot of benefits and some of them include; a monthly allowance, a return economy ticket, maintenance allowance, full covered tuition fees, and other financial support while in the university.
How to Apply
To get how to apply, the applicant has to visit the Conon Collins Trust website to fill out the application form online. Although, there is a particular time the application portal becomes accessible. The application form is one of the main basic requirements and assessment of the applicant. When filling out the application form online, all blank spaces must be filled out accurately and complete before submission. There are some basic requirements needed for filling out the application form on the website and they include:
- Undergraduate degree certificate
- Academic transcript
- Reference letters
- ID documents eg: passport, drivers license
- Birth certificate
- Proof of national status.
