The Australian Government, Australian Universities and organizations offer a variety of scholarships in Australia for international students. These scholarships for International students are either for undergraduate and postgraduate studies, vocational education and training.

Below is a list of scholarships in Australia for international students from Africa and developing countries. While some of these scholarship applications are still open, some deadlines may have passed. But most of the scholarships are awarded annually. Take note of the time of the year applications open, and check back.

Australian Government scholarships for international students

Australia Awards Scholarships

Australia Awards, a cornerstone of the Australian Government’s development assistance program for Africa, provide access to postgraduate education, training and professional development opportunities for suitably qualified Africans from eligible countries. On their return to the workplace, Australia Awards Alumni are expected to contribute actively to development in their home countries.

Level of study: Masters degree

Previous Application Deadline: 12 December for Masters Awards & 16 January for Africa Fellowships.

Universities in Australia Scholarships for International Students

Macquarie University Scholarships for International Students

Macquarie University International Scholarships are available across most courses to cover international tuition fees for study on campus at North Ryde in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree. The scholarship provides course fees for the minimum course duration.

Level of study: Undergraduate and Masters degree

University of Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS)

The University of Melbourne, Australia offers Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS) for international students to study in Australia. Each year the University offers about 200 new Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRSs), of which about 200 are normally awarded to international students as MIRSs.

Level of study: Masters and PhD degree

Adelaide Scholarships International (ASI)

The University of Adelaide offers a scholarships scheme for international students undertaking postgraduate research study for Master’s and Doctoral degrees. A number of ASI scholarships will be available to outstanding international students from any country undertaking postgraduate research in any academic discipline.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)

The University of Adelaide offers The International Postgraduate Research Scholarships to high performing overseas postgraduate students in Australia. The International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) scheme is funded by the Commonwealth Government through the Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

Level of study: Masters and Doctoral degree

University of Newcastle Scholarships for Postgraduate Students

The University of Newcastle, Australia, offers a number of postgraduate research scholarships for International students to study for Master’s and Doctoral degrees. Scholarship application is open to international students from all countries with the exception of Australian and New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents. Scholarship applications will be accepted between 1 January and 31 August each year.

Australian Catholic University International Student Scholarship

ACU offers scholarships to up to 20 international students starting undergraduate or postgraduate courses each year. They will cover half the full-time tuition fees. ACU also offers full tuition scholarships for up to two international students starting research degrees each year.

Level of study: Undergraduate Masters and PhD degree

Organizations in Australia Scholarships for international students

International Doctoral Research Scholarships New Zealand

The NZIDRS provides full tuition fees plus a living stipend for up to 36 months for international students to undertake PhD study at a New Zealand university. The NZIDRS are funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand.

Level of study: Doctoral degree

The IWC Water Leader Scholarships offer full and partial tuition scholarships for Australian citizens, permanent residents and international applicants for the Master’s in Integrated Water Management program.

UN-Nippon Fellowship Programme in Ocean Affairs for Coastal Developing Countries

The main objective of the fellowship is to provide opportunities for advanced education and training in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea, and related disciplines including marine science, to Government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing coastal States, so that they may obtain the necessary knowledge to assist their countries to formulate comprehensive ocean policy and to implement the legal regime set out in UNCLOS and related instruments.
