Shell Scholarship

The Shell Petroleum Development Company started its business operations in Nigeria in 1937 as Shell D’Arcy when it was granted an exploration license. Recognizing education as a long term investment to bequeath to individuals, groups, and society in general, it started a scholarship scheme in 1957 that has stood the test of time. Since then, Shell Petroleum Company of Nigeria Limited operated Joint Venture (SPDC-JV)  has doled out billions of naira in scholarships to Nigerian students. In 2018 alone, approximately $5.9 million (1.78 billion) was invested in scholarships by SPDC-JV. Every year, it has become a norm for Shell to award scholarships to students. A trend, it hopes to continue into the foreseeable future.

Shell Scholarships For High School

The Shell Nigeria Secondary School Scholarship Scheme is reserved for host communities in Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Imo, and the Rivers States. These scholarships are awarded every year to about 2,600 secondary school students across the seven oil-rich states. The scholarship scheme serves to help successful recipients to pay their way through school.

It also seeks to improve the academic achievements of students from these host communities where Shell has its business operations. Over time, the scholarship has become an avenue for indigent students to attend quality schools. Lots of parents now look forward to this opportunity which had become a constant feature in the educational development of the Niger Delta.

Shell Scholarships For Tertiary Institutions

  • Shell Undergraduate Scholarships: The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (operator of the NNPC/Shell/TEPN/AGIP Joint Venture Scholarship Scheme offers first-year students in all Nigeria universities the opportunity to study with an annual grant from the SPDC-JV for the full duration of their course. The programme aims to promote academic excellence and improve the skills of young Nigerians. The Shell Undergraduate Scholarships for students in Nigerian Universities is subdivided into two categories: National Merit Award (NM) and Areas of Operations Merit Award (OM).
  • The National Merit Award (NM) is open to all Nigerians.
  • The Areas of Operations Merit Award (OM) is for Nigerians who are oncogenes of SPDC’s operational areas in Abia, Bayelsa, Delta, Imo and Rivers.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be a Nigerian citizen.
  • Be registered Full Time Undergraduate in an accredited university in Nigeria.
  • Be in 200 level with a minimum CGPA of 2.5.
  • Have a minimum of 5 credits including Mathematics and English in their Senior School Certificate Examinations.
  • Have a minimum score of 200 in UTME.

How to Apply

1. Every applicant should have a valid personal email address (for consistent communication).

2. Scanned copies of letters of identification, stamped and signed by:

    • The Paramount Ruler of the community; and
    • The Chairman of the Community Development (CDC) or
    • The Chairman of the Executive Council (CEC) or

3. The Community Trust (CT) is also required for applicants for the Operation Area Award.

The letter should be addressed to “The ER Manager, Social Performance/Social Investment, The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, Port Harcourt, Rivers State”.

Niger Delta Postgraduate Scholarships

Applications are currently submitted for the Shell SNEPCo Postgraduate Scholarship for Nigerian Students to study in UK 2020 academic session.

The objective of the scheme is to provide an opportunity for qualifying students from any state and the federal capital territory to acquire a Master’s Degree in courses that are relevant to the oil and gas industry, with a specific focus on Geotechnical Engineering and Hydrography at renowned universities in the United Kingdom.

The following courses qualify for an award of scholarships at the three institutions:

  • University of Birmingham: M.Sc Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Newcastle University: M.Sc Geotechnical Engineering.
  • University of Plymouth: M.Sc Hydrography.

Value: The scholarship will cover full tuition fees, one return flight from Nigeria to the UK and a contribution towards living expenses only.


  • Display intellectual ability and leadership potential
  • Meet the University’s English language requirements
  • Be aged below 28 years by 30/09/2020
  • Possess a university degree equivalent to a UK Second Class Upper (Honours Degree) at a minimum Not have studied previously in the UK or any other developed country
  • Have a valid Nigerian passport valid to December.
  • Be neither current nor former employees (who have left employment less than 5 years before) of SPDC, the Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies, or the Nigerian Consultant;
  • Not be a spouse, child, or ward of staff of Shell Companies in Nigeria or the Nigerian Consultant

How to Apply

  • Submit an application for admission to any of the prospective universities for any of the above qualifying courses
  • Application forms for the scholarship will ONLY be available through the websites of the participating universities following an offer of admission.
  • Universities will process applications and endorse eligible candidates to attend an interview before being considered for final selection
  • Completed scholarship application forms must reach participating universities not later than 30th June.

Overall, The Shell Scholarship scheme seeks to better a lot of Nigerian citizens, using education as a veritable tool. This it has done for years now and will continue to do so in the near future. Qualified candidates are encouraged to partake in these scholarships.
