Canadian immigration allows students to live in Canada up to three years after graduation, which is enough to search and find a job. Once you have a job, obtaining permanent resident status becomes easier if you are eligible.
Once you meet the minimum requirements, you can apply for a permanent residency visa. If your application is approved, you can live in Canada for the rest of your life, which will allow you to increase your wages and improve your lifestyle and facilities.
Beautiful and Lively Cities
Canada has beautiful and natural locations, much of which still remains untouched. This is where the country receives its nickname: The Great White North.
Much of Canada is, in fact, a vast expanse of desert and an exciting playground for outdoor enthusiasts. You can walk, climb mountains, ski or even visit a beach on the West or East Coast.
Although the north end can be quite cold, the southern provinces experience a milder climate that many find quite pleasant. If you prefer to mix with the population, you will probably enjoy the nightlife that the main cities of Canada offer to students.
Even campuses offer a multitude of activities, sports and clubs in which students can participate. In addition, you can discover the many culinary, musical and leisure activities that the cities offer.
A Safe Community
Canada is a safe, friendly country with a high standard of living. The low crime rate, the health benefits of students and universities focused on the safety of students make studying in Canada a good option for those who care about personal safety abroad. The Global Peace Index ranks Canada as one of the 10 safest countries in the world to visit.
How to apply to a University in Canada
Applying to any university in Canada can be competitive. This is because universities receive applications from more potential students than they can accept.
Also, programs may have quotas or limited enrolment and admissions committees use both objective and subjective elements of the application process to ascertain which students are most likely to succeed at the institution.
With the guide below, you can apply to any Canadian university successfully.
- Step 1: Make a proper research about the universities you wish to apply for, you should make sure you have at least three options that you want to apply for just in case;
- Step 2: Check their admission requirements for international students, this will cover:
- Admission times;
- Language requirements;
- Credit scores for the degree or program you want to apply for;
- Application letter format to the university; and
- It may also be necessary to send personal profiles. This is part of your student profile and lasts approximately 30 minutes. The university asks you to answer three questions with a short essay and two short videos.
- Step 3: You will be required to submit necessary documents like:
- A certified copy of your diploma or certificate;
- A complete application form for your course;
- An updated CV (if needed);
- Letter of Intent (This states your intention to enrol in the college or university and any education course you wish to apply for);
- Language results that are no more than one year old for English or French:
- English tests that are generally accepted: IELTS, TOEFL and C1 Advanced
- French tests that are mainly accepted in Canada are: TEF, TCF, DALF and DELF
- Proof of funds to show that you can support yourself and anyone who immigrates with you during your studies;
- If you are applying for a PhD or Masters program, you will need to have two letters of Academic Reference, along with previous Letters of Employment; and
- If you did not study in Canada, you will also need to have your education assessed with an ECA (Educational Credential Assessment)
Please note: All the documents must be translated into either English or French by a certified translator and the original documents must also be included in your application.
- Step 4: You will get then your Offer of Admission which is also called an Acceptance letter from the university after your application is processed.
- Step 5: Apply for your study permit and show that you:
- Have enough funds to support yourself;
- Have a medical certificate from an approved doctor from the Canadian panel of physicians (if you plan to study in Canada for longer than six months);
- Have the intent to come to Canada for the sole purpose of studying;
- Inform the Canadian Immigration Office that you intend to leave after your studies are complete; and
- Provide Police Clearance also known as a police certificate to show that you are a law abiding person with no criminal record (this includes DUIs)
A useful tip to know is that you must have health coverage while you study in Canada because you cannot qualify for public health care unless you are either a permanent resident or Canadian citizen.
If you are an international student, you will need to apply for a study permit before you come to Canada. This acts instead of a visa and can be requested through the website of the Government of Canada or the Canadian Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
A study permit will allow you to stay in Canada for the duration of your course plus 90 days. Within 90 days, you must request an extension of your stay or plan to leave the country.
If for some reason you cannot complete your studies before the date indicated on your license, you must request an extension of your stay as a student. If you finish your studies before, your license will cease to be valid 90 days after the end of your studies, which may be different from the original expiration date.
