Immigration authorities use POF to confirm that you can pay for tuition, living expenses, and travel without depending on public funds. It’s crucial for student, visitor, and permanent residence applications.
What are acceptable forms of Proof of Funds?
Acceptable POF documents include:
- Official bank statements (savings or current account)
- Fixed deposit certificates
- Proof of scholarships or bursaries
- Loan approval letters (from recognized financial institutions)
- Financial sponsorship letters (with supporting POF from the sponsor)
Can I use real estate or property as Proof of Funds?
Generally, no. Real estate or property assets are not liquid and are usually not accepted as valid POF for visa purposes. Cash in bank accounts or financial instruments is preferred.
How do I get a Proof of Funds bank statement in Nigeria?
Visit your bank (e.g., GTB, Zenith, Access) and request an official stamped bank statement for the past 4–6 months. You can also ask for a Letter of Attestation of Account Balance.
What should a Proof of Funds letter contain?
A POF letter should include:
- Account holder’s full name
- Account number
- Current balance
- Average balance over the past 4–6 months
- Bank’s name, logo, address, contact info, and an official stamp/signature
How much money is required for Proof of Funds for Canada (2024–2025)?
For a single applicant under Express Entry, the minimum is around CAD 13,757 (2024). Students must show enough for tuition + CAD 10,000 per year for living expenses (CAD 11,000 for Quebec).
What is proof of funds for a UK student visa?
You must show you have:
- Tuition fees for 1 academic year
- £1,334 per month (up to 9 months) if studying in London
- £1,023 per month outside London
Can my application be rejected due to insufficient Proof of Funds?
Yes. If the funds are not sufficient, the statement is unverifiable, the format is suspicious, or the money appears to be deposited suddenly (“bulk lodgement”), your application may be rejected.
What if someone is sponsoring me?
Your sponsor must provide:
- A letter stating they’re covering your costs
- Their valid ID and relationship to you
- Bank statements showing sufficient funds
- (Sometimes) a sworn affidavit or legal sponsorship document
Can I use a loan or financial aid as Proof of Funds?
Yes, if it’s from a recognized source like a bank (e.g., MPower, Prodigy Finance) or government agency and includes a clear repayment plan and confirmation of disbursement.
Is MT199 an acceptable proof of funds?
MT199 is a SWIFT message used by banks; while not common for visa applications, it may be accepted in some high-value transactions. It is not standard for immigration POF.
