University of Dar es Salaam

About

Established in 1961, the University of Dar es Salaam is located in Tanzania. It is the oldest and largest public university in Tanzania, the University was initially an affiliated college of the University of London. An affiliate of the University of East Africa in 1963, not long after Tanzania gained her independence from the United Kingdom. University of Dar es Salaam was officially an independent university after the UAE (University of East Africa) split into 3 in 1970 through parliament act no.12 of 1970 of the constituent colleges. By the time of the University’s split from the University of East Africa, the University of Dar es Salaam had already created six academic units namely: Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Agriculture research and institute of Kiswahili research.

Consequently, other units were added overtime to make the University of Dar es Salaam more comprehensive, this enabled the creation and transmission of well-rounded, all-encompassing education. The University of Dar es Salaam was responsible for the training of individuals who were needed in the development plans of the public and private sector in Tanzania, post-independence.

The University created various programs which had a direct bearing on the required skill set needed to run the offices created for the development of Tanzania, and it was therefore expected that upon completion of studies, placements for jobs which were similar to what was studied were made available to individuals upon graduation.

Currently, the University of Dar es Salaam due to its high demand and repute is the leading University in Tanzania, with the highest number of professors, postgraduate students and PhD holders in the country; the University also serves as a source of workforce for other universities in Tanzania.
