The Irish Immigration Service has changed the documentation requirements for Study Visas for long-term (more than 90 days) educational stays in Ireland, which is a significant change that all prospective overseas students should be aware of.
The revised checklist, now formally released, sets stronger and clearer documentation standards, emphasizing openness, financial sufficiency, and a good academic background. This is why it’s making waves in the international education world, and it applies to all candidates for Study Visas (Type D).
Now let’s go over the updates.

Irish Study Visa Checklist Updated for 2025
The visa application process now revolves around nine crucial sections, and the smallest error could delay or derail your application:
#1. AVATS Application and Payment Proof
The AVATS online application must be filled out, printed, signed, and dated by the applicant. In addition, a completed checklist that was recently introduced must be submitted with proof of payment for the VFS fee.
#2. Verification of Identity
It is currently required to have a passport that is valid for at least 12 months after arrival in Ireland, as well as two photos (with precise requirements). Remember to attach copies of your prior passports (only the biographical and visa pages; blank pages are not needed).
#3. Clarification of Travel Purpose
A personal letter outlining the purpose of the trip, the names of any family members or friends who live in Ireland or the UK, and long-term study goals must be submitted by the applicant. These days, this personal statement is given a lot of weight when evaluating applications.
#4. Unconditional Offer Letter
A Letter of Acceptance from an ILEP-listed institution serves as the foundation for your application. This has to contain:
- Details of the course (minimum weekly tuition of 15 hours)
- Verification of fees paid
- Bringing up private health insurance, if provided by the organization
It is important to note that your course must be on the Interim List of Eligible Programs (ILEP) or your visa will be denied. Check the list here.
#5. Proof of Fee Payment
Verifiable proof of tuition payment is essential. If the cost of your course is less than โฌ6,000, you must pay in full up front. A minimum of โฌ6,000 must be paid before applying for increased fees; any partial payments below this sum will be rejected.
Additionally, it was recently highlighted that your personal and institutional bank information must match bank transfer slips (EFTs) or receipts from validated student payment services such as PaytoStudy.

#6. Educational and Language Credentials
Candidates need to send in:
- All degree certificates and academic transcripts
- English language test results (unless the medium of instruction was English)
This portion is now more extensively evaluated to ensure pupils are qualified for Irish academic standards.
#7. Financial Sufficiency
Now you must:
- Present individual bank statements attesting to your self-funding.
- Send in sponsor documentation (if any), such as signed sponsorship letters and verified bank accounts (chit money, gold, or cryptocurrency are not accepted).
- Completing a Financial Summary Form (FSF) is a recently enforced requirement to assist students in understanding the minimal amount of money needed.
#8. Health and Security
You need to have:
- Private health coverage that complies with Irish immigration regulations
- Police Clearance Certificates (PCCs) from every nation where the individual has resided for the past five years, except Ireland or the UK, if biometrics are included
#9. Disclosure of Prior Refusals of Visas
It is now required to provide a complete disclosure along with refusal letters if you have previously had your visa denied by any nation. Ignoring this could lead to permanent bans.
Candidates must affirm that they realize the decision about their visa will be based only on the documentation they have supplied. There is no opportunity for speculation or missing documents because both the applicant and the visa officer must sign.
More transparency and fewer opportunities for fraudulent or incomplete submissions are guaranteed by this updated checklist. However, it also implies that students, particularly those applying for the September 2025 intake, need to prepare carefully.
Your Irish dream can now be dashed if you are missing a single financial document, have an old passport, or are unable to present a PCC.
Who Should Apply With These New Rules?
The following are covered by these upgraded requirements:
- Students in Ireland pursuing full-time master’s, doctoral, or bachelor’s degrees
- Participants in long-term (more than 25 weeks) English language courses
- Irish students are enrolled in professional certification programs or foundation programs.
- Student loans for education
