WHY STUDY FOR A DOCTORATE IN GERMANY?

Germany is among the world’s leading nations when it comes to research. It has great infrastructure, a wide range of research fields and state-of-the-art research institutions, with some of the best researchers in the world.

Most German education policies have international dimension, including PhDs. There is great effort and interest in support of international scholarships whether Masters or PhD. As of 2010, an estimated 240,000 international students studied at German universities and other higher institutions, with 18,000 graduate students and 26,000 researchers. With these figures, Germany is among the most patronized countries for researchers and students around the world.

There are two kinds of doctoral programs in Germany: the Traditional Individual Doctorate, and Structured Doctoral Programmes.

The former is the most common in Germany. The student will work in collaboration with and under the supervision of a professor while independently doing their research. Research is conducted alone or together with other students, depending on the field of study.

Structured Doctoral Programmes on the other hand, will involve a team of supervisors mentoring a group of doctoral students. These programs are mostly interdisciplinary with the opportunity for students to acquire soft skills and additional qualification. Normally the intensive study makes it possible to acquire a PhD in three years.

THERE ARE THREE WAYS TO APPLY TO GERMAN UNIVERSITIES

There is no restriction on age or nationality. Students can apply from all over the world for any of the programs listed in this article. We have pulled the complete list of all PhD programs to save you the time of searching through DAAD’s PhD database. Go through the list to find a program that you like.  Click on that program to open a page that will provide greater details about the course. On the right of each page you will find a link to the university, institution or organization that will be funding you through DAAD. Follow the link to find even more details like requirement, application process, criteria, etc. you have to first apply directly to the institution before filling a DAAD PhD scholarship form. Only when an institution admits you will DAAD award a scholarship.

There are three ways a foreign student can apply to any German university.

  1. Via Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung OR
  2. directly to the higher education institution (recommended) OR
  3. Through the University Application Service for International Students (UNI-ASSIST)

Only students from the EU or those who graduated from a German university can apply through Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung. The second method can be used by any student i.e. applying directly to the university. This should be your preferred method when applying for PhD, unless if the university does not accept applications directly. In that case you may have to apply through UNI-ASSIST. The downside with uni-assist is that they charge you for handling fees, take longer to process admission, and can only help with universities registered in its network of 180. If you are not from the EU or a graduate of German university, and the institution of choice does not process applications directly, then uni-assist becomes your only option.

You must first know if the university you are applying to is a member of uni-assist. To do that, visit this link. You can then sign up at the uni-assist portal by clicking the UNI-ASSIST link above. Just follow the onscreen instructions to complete your application.

Choose English as your language unless you are proficient in German and have certification. Choose your home country. Type your email. Click “Next” at the top left corner of the page. If you filled in the form completely, a page will display with a prompt to set your password. If you made the correct password combination, a page will load with a “Success” message for you to activate your account through the activation mail sent to you.

After activating your account and logging in, you will be taken directly to the “Personal Funding” tab. Under “Personal Funding” tab, click “Applications”. VISA APPLICATION PROCESS

Every international student is required to acquire a German visa before being allowed to study in Germany. Only a few countries are relieved of this requirement and they are: USA, Israel, South Korea, Japan, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. As a prospective student, what you need is the student visa.

There Are Three Types Of Student Visa:

  1. Language Course Visa: for students who are going to Germany for a foundation study or language course
  2. Student Applicant Visa: for prospective students who wish to apply while in Germany
  3. Student Visa: for students who have been accepted by a German university. This will be the category for DAAD students.

REQUIRMENTS FOR STUDENT VISAS

There are certain documents you must have before applying for a student visa, depending on the visa category. You may also be asked to present additional documents after a visa interview.

  1. Valid passport: your passport should be valid for the entire period you will stay in Germany including extensions. This is a most for everyone except EU members and a few others who may use IDs.
  2.  Proof of health insurance (not required for beneficiaries of DAAD scholarship for masters and others)
  3.  proof of sufficient funds (not required for students on DAAD scholarship for masters and others)
  4.  records of previous study and language skills (not a requirement for most countries)
  5. acceptance letter from the institution (for students who claim to have gained admission)
  6.  A recognized higher education entrance exams (for prospective students)
  7.  Possibly health certificates (not a requirement for many countries)

HEALTH INSURANCE CERTIFICATE

Students from the EU can use their statutory health insurance in Germany. The European Health Insurance Card EHIC is necessary for the insurance to be recognized by statutory health insurance providers in Germany.

For students of other nationalities sometimes a private health insurance from their country is acceptable although such students cannot switch to a statutory health insurance provider in Germany. In either case the student will need to have an insurance certificate before applying for a visa, or they can take out a health insurance while in Germany.

If you do not have a European or private health insurance recognized in Germany, you will have to sign up for one upon arrival. The statutory insurance providers in Germany offer great discounts for students 30 years or below. DAAD scholarship holders are automatically insured.

PROOF OF FUNDING

Germany may not be as expensive as most European countries, but they won’t allow you in until you convince them that you can finance your education. As from January 2020, you must have access to at least 10236 EUR before you will be issued a visa. You can present parental proof, or proof of reserved funds in a German blocked account or proof of scholarship award like the one from DAAD.

The visa fee is 75 EUR. There will be no refunds and payment must be through bank transfer. The money order must bear the initials of the Embassy/Consulate in your home country and should be within two months.  Consult the website of your home country for when the next visa interview will hold. You have to book a visa interview via the online system (not by phone, e-mail, and fax or in person). On the day of the interview, you must appear in person and alone.

COST OF LIVING IN GERMANY

The cost of living in Germany is cheaper than in most European countries. Housing will top the list of expenditures by amount. You will spend about 34% of your living budget on rent. There are cheaper options for international student, like living in residence halls, shared private apartment, or student dormitories. Living alone will cost you about 360 EUR a month. Living on campus will cost between 150 and 240 EUR/month. It is difficult to find accommodation in students’ residence halls, with only 11% of international students finding one. The students’ hall is of acceptable standard, and 55% of students are satisfied with the living conditions.

Utility bills can reach up to 200 EUR/month for those living alone. Internet will cost another 27 EUR a month.

As a student you can spend up to 170 EUR/month on food. You will spend a lot less at cheaper super markets. Dinner in a restaurant will cost about 10 EUR and a three-square meal about 45 EUR. According to a DAAD study, 10% of your expenses will go to transportation. Public transport will cost between 30 and 60 EUR a month, but you can buy or rent a bicycle at a considerably lower cost.

Overall, you can expect to spend between 600 – 1000 EUR every month. Not too bad for such cheap institutions with great qualities. Personally, I will prefer Germany.
