Universities and university colleges in Sweden offer a wide range of courses and study programmes where English is the language of instruction. Although Universities in Sweden used to be Tuition Free for both EU and Non-EU/ international students, beginning with the autumn semester 2011, Swedish higher institutions will be introducing application and tuition fees for international students (except Nationals of member states of the European Economic Area – EEA – i.e. the European Union countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and Switzerland) who apply for courses and programmes at universities and university colleges.
Application deadlines
Students applying for international courses and programmes in English at the first cycle (undergraduate) and/or second cycle (Master’s) level have a deadline of 17 January 2011 for autumn semester studies and 15 August for spring semester studies.
How to Apply
Sweden has a pooled admissions system where you can apply for multiple courses and study programmes offered at different universities all on the same application through Studera.nu website. In order to apply online at studera.nu you have to create a user account. A user account functions as a link between your online application and your personal data and qualifications.
Students are now able to select courses and programmes and submit their applications for autumn semester 2011. The last day to apply is 17 January 2011.
There are specific requirements for specific documents in terms of certification. For applicants who have studied in certain countries, transcripts must be sent directly from the school.
All students are required to document their proficiency in English. The requirements are different depending on what course or programme and at what level a student is applying for.
Scholarship in Sweden for International Students
You can’t apply for the Swedish Institute Scholarship directly. You need to submit your application for admission first. You will then be given an application number which you must use to apply for the SI scholarship.
You should send in your documentation as soon as possible in order to expedite the processing of your application.
How many courses and programmes can a Student apply for?
For first cycle (undergraduate/ Bachelor’s) applicants, you can apply for up to 10 courses and/or programmes in the extended application period. You can, however, only be accepted to up to 8 courses/programmes and a maximum of 45 credits per semester.
At second cycle (postgraduate/Master’s), you can apply for up to 4 study programmes, and be accepted to a maximum of 30 credits per semester.
How to Pay your application fee
Instructions for paying your application fee are the same for both First cycle (undergraduate) applicants and Second cycle (master’s) applicants. Applicants are to pay an application fee of 900 SEK (Swedish kronor) to be received by the deadline indicated in order for your application to be processed. Any payments received after the deadline will result in your application status being changed to late. Late applications are only processed at the discretion of each university/university college.
Students pay one application fee for each semester they submit an application for, regardless of how many courses or programmes you have applied to in that semester, or if you have applied to different admissions rounds in that semester – you pay 900 SEK.
Payment methods
The best method to use is to send in your payment electronically on the website, using a credit or bank card. It is the quickest and most secure way of making your payment.
The deadline for University Studies in Sweden to receive your payment and documentation is January 28, 2011. If your payment or documentation arrives after this deadline, your application will be considered late and only processed at the discretion of the university/universities you have applied to.
