Wilhelm Frank Trust Masters and Doctoral Scholarships for South African Students 2017/2018

The Frank Wilhelm Trust is offering four scholarships for Master’s students, and two for Doctoral students who are South African citizens, and who will register at the University of Cape Town in 2017 for full-time study in engineering and/or areas of the sciences that are directly associated with engineering.

About the Award: Only academically excellent students who intend to proceed with research* in areas of study that will contribute to the development of engineering and related sciences in South Africa are eligible to apply.

Type: Masters and Doctoral

Eligibility: Applicants are required to:

  • register for full-time study in any area of engineering or associated sciences at the University of Cape Town in 2017;
  • pursue their studies and/or conduct research full-time, and may not therefore be employed for more than 20 hours per week;
  • provide evidence that they have achieved the Honour’s or Master’s degree either with distinction or as a top performing student;
  • enter into a legally binding agreement to remain in South Africa (for at least an equal period as the tenure of the scholarship) to promote engineering related development;
  • enter into the university’s Memorandum of Understanding in which the full plan for completion of the degree is mapped out;
  • agree to meet with the Trustees annually, and
  • undertake to repay the full value of the scholarship to the Trust should he/she:
  • cancel his/her registration before graduation;
  • leave South Africa before the equal tenure of the scholarship is over, or
  • fail to complete the degree for which the award is made. Successful candidates will NOT be permitted to hold additional merit/achievement awards concurrently with the Wilhelm Frank Trust Scholarship.

Selection Criteria: Applicants must have:

  • achieved the Honours or Master’s degree with either distinction or as a top performing student;
  • applied for and secured a place to register and study full-time at the University of Cape Town, towards the Master’s or Doctoral degree in any area of study in Engineering or the Sciences that will contribute to engineering development in South Africa;
  • secured an academic supervisor, and
  • prepared a summary or abstract of the proposed research for the perusal of the selection committee. The research to be undertaken must focus on the development of engineering for the benefit of South Africa

Value of Scholarship: 

Master’s Scholarships: The Master’s scholarships are valued at R150,000 per annum. The awards are tenable for the first and second years of Master’s study only. Renewal for a 3rd year, and beyond, will not be considered. The second year of tenure of the award will be contingent on satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the twoyear time-frame for completion of the degree.

Doctoral Scholarships: The Doctoral scholarships are valued at R220,000 per annum. The awards are tenable for the 1 st, 2nd 3 rd and 4th years of registration for the degree. Funding for and 4th year must be strongly motivated and support for a fifth year and beyond will not be considered. The second, third and fourth years of tenure of the scholarships will be contingent on satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the four-year time-frame for completion of the degree.

Funds to support approved conference or research collaboration travel may be available on separate application.

How to Apply: Interested candidates are required to submit the following:

  • Completion of the required Application Form (available from this URL: http://www.uct.ac.za/apply/funding/postgraduate/applications/)
  • A letter of interest indicating the intended area of study and future plans where the applicant’s education will be used as leverage for development of engineering for the benefit of South Africa.
  • An abstract or a summary of the proposed research (no longer than three A4 pages).
  • A certified copy of the South African Identity Document or Passport.
  • An abbreviated CV which include leadership and community roles.
  • Certified copies of all academic transcripts (Please do not send in any certificates).
  • References from at least TWO ACADEMICS who have taught or supervised the candidate in a postgraduate degree. The references should be submitted directly to the Director (see below) via e mail, or submitted in sealed envelopes.

Selection: Eligible applications will be considered by the Deans of Engineering and the Built Environment and Science, together with a sub-committee of the university’s Postgraduate Studies Funding Committee. The successful candidates will be confirmed by the Trustees.
