Tell Me About the Position:
The University of Helsinki Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher in the Anthropology of Humanitarianism. The position is part of the project “New Humanitarian Infrastructures at the End of Aid”, funded by the Research Council of Finland and led by Dr Stefan Millar. The project examines transformations in humanitarian systems amid the global withdrawal of international aid, focusing on contexts in Kenya and transnational diaspora networks in Canada.
Research Themes:
The doctoral project should align with one or more of the following:
- State Infrastructures – the role of state-led initiatives in reshaping humanitarianism.
- Refugee-led Infrastructures – refugee-driven alternatives to top-down humanitarian systems.
- Transnational Remittance Infrastructures – diaspora financial and digital networks as aid alternatives.
- Corporate Infrastructures – private-sector and digital systems (including AI) in humanitarian governance.

Who can apply?
Applicants must:
- Hold a master’s degree in anthropology or a related field (e.g., human geography, development studies, migration/refugee studies, sociology, public health, political science, or peace and conflict research).
- Have proven ability and motivation to pursue doctoral studies.
- Secure the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of employment (or within the six-month probationary period).
- Possess strong analytical and writing skills.
- Be able to conduct independent ethnographic research in Kenya or another relevant humanitarian context.
Preferred:
- Refugee and/or East African background.
- Experience living, working, or researching in humanitarian contexts.
- Language skills such as Swahili, Arabic, and Somali.
