The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the African School of Governance (ASG), the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN), today opened applications for the inaugural cohort of the African Academy for Women in Political Leadership, a continental programme designed to build the next generation of women who govern Africa.

The African Academy for Women in Political Leadership is a fully funded, four‑week blended programme designed to equip women leaders across Africa with the skills, networks, and resources to succeed in political leadership. Organized by UNDP, ASG, AUC, and AWLN, the Academy combines virtual learning with a residential convening in Kigali, Rwanda.

Eligible Profiles:

  • Electoral Cycle Leaders: Declared candidates, MPs seeking re‑election, campaign strategists.
  • Sitting Political Leaders: Cabinet Ministers, MPs, Speakers, Mayors, Governors, senior party leaders.
  • Young Women Leaders (21–35): Aspiring candidates, emerging leaders in parties or institutions.
  • Women with disabilities and those from fragile contexts are strongly encouraged.

How are Candidates Selected?

  • Competitive, merit‑based review by UNDP, AUC, AWLN, and ASG.
  • Selection ensures regional balance, inclusivity, and strategic impact.
  • Cohort composition:
    • Representation from all five African regions (max 2 per country).
    • At least 60% from countries with elections in 12–36 months.
    • At least 40% young women leaders (21–35).
    • Linguistic diversity (Anglophone, Francophone, Lusophone, Arabophone).
    • Balance across executive, legislative, and party leadership roles.

  • Hybrid format: Virtual learning + residential convening in Kigali, Rwanda.
