The Africa Women Journalism Project (AWJP), in partnership with DW Akademie, is now accepting applications for the second cohort of the Gender + AI Reporting Fellowship. The application deadline is April 15, 2026. This opportunity targets women journalists in Kenya who are eager to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies impact women and gender-diverse communities.
The fellowship aims to build practical skills in gender-sensitive journalism, AI literacy, and investigative storytelling. Importantly, you do not need to be a technology reporter or have prior experience with AI tools to apply. The program encourages applications from journalists across Kenya, especially from Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley (including Turkana), Central, and Coastal regions.

About this Program
The Gender + AI Reporting Fellowship supports 10 women journalists to investigate how AI and digital technologies affect women and gender-diverse communities in Kenya. Fellows will receive training on AI literacy, gender-sensitive reporting, and the social impacts of AI. They will also develop and publish four original journalism stories during the fellowship.
The program includes online training sessions, one-on-one mentorship, editorial feedback, and technical support. At the end of the fellowship, there will be a public showcase of fellows’ stories, offering networking opportunities with media organizations, editors, and partners.

Eligibility Criteria
- Women journalists based in Kenya
- Work in print, radio, television, or digital media
- Ability to participate in online training and mentorship
- Access to a laptop and reliable internet connection
- Interest in reporting on gender, technology, or digital issues
- Freelance journalists are welcome
- Submission of a letter of intent to publish from a newsroom or media outlet
What Fellows Receive: Microgrants for story production, access to AI tools, mentorship, editorial support, data analysis assistance, and networking opportunities.
