The Equity and Merit Scholarships at the University of Manchester are designed to support academically excellent students from the Global South, specifically Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. These scholarships empower talented individuals to drive sustainable development in their home countries.
There are 30 scholarships available:
- 20 full‑time, on‑campus master’s scholarships (1 year)
- 10 part‑time, distance learning scholarships (3–5 years)
The scholarships cover full tuition fees, and for on‑campus students, they also include return international airfares, living expenses, and visas.

Who can Apply?
Applicants must:
- Be a resident citizen of Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, or Zimbabwe.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree awarded before September 2025 with required grades.
- Have at least two years’ professional experience in their chosen field (excluding unpaid internships/volunteering).
- Be committed to returning home and contributing to sustainable development.
- Demonstrate how studying at Manchester will benefit their career and community.
- Not have previously studied outside Africa (short training ≤6 months is allowed).
How are Applicants Selected?
- Applications reviewed for eligibility.
- Eligible applicants invited to apply for their chosen master’s course (October 2026).
- Applicants must hold an unconditional offer before shortlisting.
- Final decisions announced in June 2027.
