The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) is a merit‑based tuition reduction award for academically outstanding students applying to full‑time Master’s degree programs at Leiden University starting in September 2027. It is one of the most competitive scholarships in the Netherlands, designed to support top international students who would otherwise face significant tuition costs.
Which Fields are Eligible?
Eligible faculties include:
- Archaeology
- Humanities
- Medicine/LUMC
- Governance & Global Affairs
- Law (excluding non‑Advanced LLM and MSc Law School programs)
- Social & Behavioural Sciences
- Science
Special note: All nationalities are eligible for Advanced LLM programs and the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy.

Who can Apply?
Applicants must:
- Hold a non‑EEA/non‑EFTA passport (exceptions apply for Advanced LLMs and MSc International Relations & Diplomacy).

- Have achieved excellent academic results, typically ranking in the top 10% of graduates in their previous program.
- Apply for a full‑time Master’s program starting September 2027 (excluding February starts).
How are Applicants Selected?
- Selection is based on academic excellence and the strength of the motivation letter (max 500 words).
- Faculties nominate recipients within 10 weeks of the deadline.
- Results are communicated by March 2027.
Which Countries Are Eligible?
- Non‑EEA/non‑EFTA countries (exceptions for Advanced LLMs and MSc International Relations & Diplomacy).
- UK applicants are eligible unless already registered in the Dutch BRP before 1 January 2021.
