If you wish to get admission into Australia without an agent, you are in the right place. The following essential criteria for Australian student visas must be met, and you must be able to demonstrate this to the Department of Home Affairs:
- Requirement for Genuine Temporary Entrants (GTE)
- Necessary resources
- Requirements for English fluency
- Prerequisites for character and health
You’ll also need to fill out an application for an Australian student visa, pay the visa application fee, and maybe go to an interview. Is that a lot to keep in mind? Here is all the information you require.

What is a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)?
The real Temporary Entrant (GTE) condition, which was introduced in November 2011, states that the visa application must be able to demonstrate a real intention to stay in Australia for a short time to study or to accompany a student,i.e.., dependent (i.e., spouse, child, or guardian). The following variables will be taken into account by the Department of Home Affairs decision-makers:
- Situations in your own country
- Possible scenarios for you in Australia
- The importance of your chosen path to your future
- History of your immigration
You may need to attend an interview at the nearest Australian embassy to find out if you meet the GTE criteria. Note that only a visa application form will be required for some applicants.
Completing an Australian student visa application form
All international students apply for the Student Visa (Subclass 500) online.
You must acquire a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) or a Letter of Offer confirming your acceptance into a course registered under the Commonwealth Register of Institutions of Courses (CRICOS) before applying for a visa. The COE will be presented to you as an online code, which you must input in the relevant field on the online visa application. You might also be required to put down a deposit for your tuition.
Afterward, you will be able to switch to a course at the same or a higher study level in Australia, but if you want to switch to a course at a lower level on the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) or a non-AQF level (unless you’re switching from a PhD to a master’s), you’ll need to apply for a new visa. On your Student Visa (Subclass 500), you may combine up to two courses if there is a clear progression from one course to the next.
Requirements for student visas in Australia
According to the requirements for an Australian student visa, you must submit proof of the following while completing your online visa application form:
#1. Financial requirements:
This proves you have enough money to pay for your tuition, travel, and living expenses. The amount you must demonstrate you have for living expenses (apart from tuition and travel) is set at AU$ 21,041 (about US$14,185) for a year as of February 2018. If you have dependents, such as a spouse or children, you will also need to provide proof that you can afford to pay for their living expenses, which include their school expenses. As an alternative, you can provide proof that your partner or parents can support you and that they make at least AU$62,222 (about US$41,949) annually.
#2. English proficiency requirement:
You must demonstrate that you can speak English at the necessary level if you are not from an English-speaking nation and have not studied there for at least five years. The IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, and Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) are acceptable tests. Whether you are beginning a full degree, taking a foundation course, or registering for an introductory English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS), it will determine the score you need.
#3. Health requirements:
Some students may need to undergo a medical and/or radiological examination to demonstrate their physical fitness (this is the case, for instance, for those planning to pursue careers as doctors, dentists, or nurses). Note that you must go to a doctor’s appointment if instructed by the Australian immigration department.
#4. Character requirements:
To enter Australia, you must meet the conditions for an Australian student visa. To ensure you don’t have a serious criminal history, this also includes a criminal record check. You may also need to obtain a criminal background check certificate (or a police certificate), obtain a police statement, fill out a police questionnaire, and complete the Character Statutory Declaration Form.
Documents for an Australian student visa
You can get a list of the documents for your particular situation on the Department of Home Affairs website’s document checklist tool. Normally, students need to turn in the following:
- Submitted a completed Form 157A for an Australian student visa
- Paid visa application fee – currently AU$650 (~US$438) in most cases
- A copy of the biodata page from a passport (some students may need to present their passports in person)
- Letter of Offer or Certificate of Enrollment
- Proof of enough funding
- Proof that you have health insurance
- Results of an English proficiency exam
- Results of a criminal history check
- Four current passport-size pictures
After assembling and scanning your supporting documentation, you must register for an account and submit an application through the online ImmiAccount application system.
Note that the processing time for 50% of visa requests is four weeks. Your visa will typically be valid until March 15 of the following year if you are studying in Australia for a degree that lasts longer than 10 months and ends after an Australian academic year (often in mid-December). Your visa will typically be valid for two months after the conclusion of your course if it is longer than 10 months and ends in January or October.
After your course, it might be possible in some cases to apply for a different visa (for more information, visit the Department of Home Affairs website).
Using your student visa
Up to 90 days before the start of your course, you have permission to enter Australia on a student visa. Your education provider must be notified of your residence address within seven days of arrival, and you must likewise notify them within seven days if your residence changes.
To tackle a shortage of workers, hours for student visa employees have been temporarily relaxed. Students may start working before the start of their term of study and may work more than 40 hours per week in any industry.
There are no job limitations if you are pursuing a PhD or a master’s by research. Keep in mind that the limit does not include any work that is needed as part of your course. If the labor is truly volunteer, performed for a non-profit, and serves the community, it is also exempt from the 40-hour restriction.
You must continue to be enrolled in a CRICOS-registered course, attend classes regularly, demonstrate good academic progress, and retain OSHC health insurance while holding a student visa. Additionally, there are certain visa conditions you and your dependents must follow; going against these conditions may lead to your visa being canceled.
