1. Commonwealth Scholarship

Each year, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission invites each nominating agency, university, or university body to forward a specific number of nominations for the Commonwealth scholarship for developing countries. Each nominating agency/university body is responsible for its own selection process, and in most cases they will set a closing date in the months preceding the CSC’s deadline for nominations.

2. Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarships, set up by the Department for International Development (DFID) in 1986, represent a unique partnership between the United Kingdom government and UK universities. To date, more than 3,500 students from developing Commonwealth countries have been awarded shared scholarships.

3. Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships

Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships support one year’s study at a UK university as part of a PhD being undertaken in your home country, under joint supervision of a home country and UK supervisor.

4. Commonwealth Professional Fellowships for Commonwealth Developing Countries

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission offers the Commonwealth Professional Fellowships to support mid-career professionals from developing Commonwealth countries to spend a period of time with a UK host organization working in their field for a program of professional development. Fellowships are typically three months but can be between one and six months in length and can include limited time for attendance at short courses or conferences, as well as visits to other organizations.

5. Chevening Scholarships for Commonwealth Countries

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship programme was established in 1983 and is now an internationally prestigious scheme with over 41,000 alumni. Chevening Scholarships are currently offered in approximately 110 countries. Chevening awards enable scholars to study a one-year postgraduate master’s course in any discipline at any UK university.

6. Africa Graduate Scholarships at UCL

The scholarships exist to support African nationals with a high-quality academic and professional background who would not be able to study at UCL without financial assistance. The scholarship is a one-off award for the academic year September-September to study at the UCL Institute for Global Health.

10. Irish Aid Postgraduate Fellowships

Irish Aid Fellowships are awarded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and are targeted mainly at the countries in which Ireland has established development cooperation programs: Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam, plus the Palestinian territories.

11. Masters: Africa London Nagasaki (ALN) scholarship fund for African scientists

The Africa London Nagasaki (ALN) scholarship fund supports African scientists wishing to undertake a Master’s degree related to the control of infectious diseases in Africa. 15. Full Beit Trust Scholarship for Students from Malawi, Zambia, or Zimbabwe

The Beit Trust offers, annually, a small number of scholarships abroad for postgraduate studies or research to graduates who are domiciled in Malawi, Zambia, or Zimbabwe (the beneficial area). 17. Sir Richard Stapley Educational Trust Scholarships for Undergraduate Students in Medical Fields & Postgraduate Students in All Fields

19. Funds for Women Graduates Grants for PhD/Doctoral Study & Research

Windle Trust International provides access to education and training for those affected by conflict in Africa. 22. Eni Scholarship at the University of Oxford

27. Oppenheimer Fund Scholarships for South African Students

Harry Frederick Oppenheimer was a noted South African businessman, philanthropist, and opponent of apartheid. In 1993, he endowed the Oppenheimer Fund at the University of Oxford. The Fund promotes links between the University of Oxford and South African universities. 31. Waverley Fund Scholarship in African Studies

The Waverley Fund will award scholarships in the academic year for Masters (MSc) in African Studies to academically excellent students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have shown the potential to make a significant contribution in their future careers. 38. Microsoft Research PhD Scholarships Programme

The Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) was launched in 2004 and has so far supported more than 200 PhD students across the region. Each year by September, PhD supervisors from academic institutions in EMEA submit their proposals for collaborative research projects with Microsoft Research Cambridge.

40. Mandela Magdalene College Scholarship for South Africa

The Mandela Magdalene College Scholarships were announced in March 1995 when Nelson Mandela, then President of the Republic of South Africa, agreed to lend his name to the initiative.
The scheme results from collaboration between Mr. Chris von Christierson and other benefactors, the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and Magdalene College, Cambridge.
