Tell Me About Old School Ties: Old School Ties (O.S.T.) was founded in September 2016, and stems from its initiator’s growing awareness of the frustration in South Africa of (1) teaching staff wanting to advance their careers but remaining largely oblivious to the opportunities at schools elsewhere, and (2) head teachers needing to replace staff, but having to rely either on hugely expensive print media, inefficient digital forums and/or word-of-mouth.

- Teachers (and other school staff) generally remain unaware of the opportunities at schools elsewhere – and tools like the infrequent Government Gazettes and motley websites that attempt to act as meeting places for employees and employers are unsatisfactory.
- On the other hand, head teachers needing to replace staff also face difficulties – especially at the end of the academic year (when resignations abound) and at the start of the new year (when vacancies have to be filled). Using the print media is prohibitively expensive when budgets are tight, and neither the inefficient digital forums that exist nor word-of-mouth offer much comfort.
