About the Award: The NIHR Research Partnership for the Control of Chronic Diseases in Africa (RESPOND-AFRICA), is a partnership betweenย researchers, health policy makers and other stakeholders from Tanzania, Uganda, and the UK, conducting clinical andย public health studies on the control of chronic diseases in Africa. Our research partners include the National Institute forย Medical Research (NIMR) in Tanzania and the MRC/UVRI/LSHTM Uganda Research Unit and we collaborate with otherย institutions in Tanzania and Uganda and with various researchers in the UK Spain, Ireland and Norway.
We are pleased to offer a fellowship opportunity as part of our capacity development strategy. The scheme will provideย funding for 2 years. The first year is to study for an MSc in Medical Statistics or Epidemiology at the London School ofย Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The second year will be an attachment based at one of our partner institutions in Tanzaniaย or Uganda working as a statistician or an epidemiologist to gain on-the-job training in clinical, public health or population basedย research in chronic diseases. Our focus at present is the control of hypertension, diabetes and HIV-infection. We areย planning to expand to incorporate mental health in the near future.

Eligibility:
- To be eligible, candidates must be resident in and be a national of an African country, have an excellent first degree inย mathematics, medical statistics or very closely related subject, have at least one year experience of working in Africa as aย statistician or epidemiologist and be able to meet English language requirements for study in the UK. He/she should beย interested in research on the control of chronic diseases.
- Although our preference is for applicants wishing to study the MSc full-time and face-to-face in London, we will considerย applicants wishing to study an on-line MSc course provided they can complete their study and attachment within 3 years.
We would particularly welcome applications from women, and from Tanzanian and Ugandan nationals.

Value of Award: The fellowship will provide full tuition fees, stipend, and one return air fare to London and a competitive salary during theย 12-month attachment on a scientist scale at the MRC/UVI/LSHTM Uganda Research Unit or NIMR Tanzania.
Duration of Award: 2 years.
