The LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) is a prestigious one-year intensive Master’s programme offered by the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa. It is the only course of its kind in Africa, combining academic excellence with practical training in human rights.

Each year, 25–30 exceptional students spend:

  • 6 months in Pretoria (University of Pretoria).
  • 6 months at one of 12 partner universities across Africa.

Graduates join the HRDA Alumni Association, a network of over 660 professionals working in grassroots organisations, civil service, the African Union, and the United Nations.

Objectives:

  • Train human rights experts for government ministries, NGOs, and international organisations.
  • Expand collaboration among African universities to build a network of lawyers and academics specialised in human rights and democracy.
  • Promote African-focused research and teaching addressing conflict prevention, democratic transition, civil society strengthening, and rule of law.
  • Develop links with other regional master’s programmes (e.g., European EMA, South Eastern Europe, Mediterranean).

Course Details:

  • Duration: One academic year (January–December).
  • Structure: Eight modules taught through lectures, practical activities, and research.
  • Medium of instruction: English (TOEFL required for non-English backgrounds).

    • French for English speakers.
