The Newberry Library Short-Term Fellowships support PhD-holding scholars and PhD candidates with ABD status who need to use specific items in the Newberry collection. The application deadline is December 4, 2026. Selected fellows spend one to two months in residence in Chicago and join the library’s scholarly community.
In addition, the fellowship provides $3,000 per month to help cover housing, travel, and living costs. Most awards support one month of research, while some named fellowships support two months.

What Fellows Receive: $3,000 per month stipend to support housing, travel, and living costs; 1–2 months of in-residence research support; participation in the Newberry scholarly community; award period flexible within a 15-month window (June to following August). The Newberry does not provide housing.
