About this Program
The Senior Mediation Adviser roles are designed for specialists who can strengthen mediation, facilitation, and dialogue processes. Advisers support the Standby Team with expert input in areas such as mediation design, security arrangements, constitutional issues, power-sharing, gender and inclusion, climate and natural resources, transitional justice, and digital technology.
Moreover, the roles combine field deployments, remote advisory support, written analysis, and policy input. Advisers may also contribute to drafting relevant sections of peace agreements where appropriate.
Eligibility Criteria
- Advanced University Degree (Master’s) with 10 years’ relevant experience; or First Level University Degree (Bachelor’s) with 12 years’ relevant experience; or technical/military degree with 14 years’ relevant experience.
- Significant and prolonged field experience in conflict, post-conflict, or transitional situations is desirable.
- Working knowledge of oral and written English is required.
- Application materials must be submitted in English. A cover letter may be in French if accompanied by an English translation.
- Applicants must be able to travel frequently and on short notice, including within 72 hours.
- Applicants must be able to live and work under difficult conditions.

Program Components
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide technical and procedural expertise in one or more mediation specializations.
- Participate in mediation, facilitation, and dialogue processes.
- Contribute to drafting relevant sections of peace agreements as appropriate.
- Provide technical advice to MSU/UNOPS clients, mediation teams, parties, and stakeholders through deployments, remote support, calls, online engagements, and written materials.
- Prepare reports on field deployments.
- Support the development of policy and guidance materials.
- Conduct research on emerging technologies, tools, and platforms relevant to mediation processes.
- Undertake extended field assignments, usually lasting 2–3 weeks.
Preferred Skills: Working knowledge of at least one other UN language is highly desirable, particularly Arabic and French. Demonstrated ability to integrate gender considerations into work is also desirable.
