The Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI), supported by the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, is hosting a National Essay Competition for Nigerian tertiary students. The theme focuses on AI literacy and responsible technology use, encouraging young people to critically engage with how artificial intelligence should be governed and applied in Nigeria.

Essay Topic:
“Artificial Intelligence for Public Good: Balancing Innovation, Human Welfare, and Responsible Governance”
Essays must be grounded in Nigerian realities, demonstrate ethical awareness, and provide specific, well-reasoned arguments.
Which Fields are Eligible?
- Open to students in universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, colleges of technology, schools of nursing, and other diploma-awarding institutions across Nigeria.

Who can Apply?
Applicants must:
- Be current students at a recognised Nigerian tertiary institution with a valid student ID.
- Be between 18 and 30 years old.
- Submit an original, unpublished essay.
- Grant BBYDI rights to publish or reference the essay with attribution.
Essay Requirements:
- Word count: 1,200–1,500 words (excluding references)
- Language: English
- Format: Typed, Times New Roman, 12pt, double-spaced
- Structure: Clear argument with logical progression (not a general survey)
- AI use: Allowed for research support, but the argument and analysis must be original.
Judging Criteria:
- Originality of argument
- Contextual depth (grounded in Nigerian realities)
- Ethical awareness (fairness, inclusion, responsibility)
- Clarity of writing
What is the Benefit of the Award?
- 1st Place: ₦400,000
- 2nd Place: ₦300,000
- 3rd Place: ₦200,000
- Top 10 Finalists: ₦100,000 each
- Winning essays will be published in BBYDI’s advocacy materials.
How Long Will the Award Last?
- One-time competition (results announced after April 2026).
