IDB Scholarships for Muslim Communities in Non-Member Countries (SPMC)

Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Scholarship Programme for Muslim Communities in Non-Member Countries (SPMC) Scholarship Programme funds and implements its scholarship programmes as part of its overall effort in the development of human resources of its member countries and those of the Muslim communities in non-member countries. There are three scholarship programmes offered by IDB:

• Scholarship Programme for Muslim Communities in Non-Member Countries
• M.Sc Scholarship Programme in Science and Technology for IDB Least Developed Member Countries
• Merit Scholarship Programme for High Technology

Scholarship Programme for Muslim Communities in Non-Member Countries

The objective of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Scholarship Programme for Muslim Communities in Non-Member Countries (SPMC) is to improve the socio-economic conditions and to preserve the cultural and religious identities of Muslim Communities in Non-member Countries through developing their human capital resources. The Programme provides scholarship to the academically meritorious but financially needy young Muslim students to pursue undergraduate or first-degree study in professional courses.
Under this Programme, the scholarships are given as interest-free loan to the students but grants to the communities to which they belong. After graduation and gainful employment, all graduates are obliged to repay their loan amount to the community (IDB Local Trusts) for recycling and awarding additional scholarships to the local needy students.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must be able to meet the following basic criteria:
• Age not over 24 years.
• Completed senior secondary / pre-university education with good grades in major science subjects and language of instruction.
• Secured admission in one of the disciplines covered under the Programme at a recognized college or university in their own countries (for in-country study).
• Not in receipt of any other scholarship.
• Committed and needy Muslim.
• Recommended by the Counterpart Organization.

Course of study
Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture and Other fields related to mentioned disciplines

Place of study
Consistent with the concept of the Programme, students must get admission or be in the first year in their own countries.
On exceptional basis and where admissions in professional courses are not possible or not available in any particular country, the IDB assists to place students from these countries in IDB member countries, which have been generous enough to provide places for the IDB students in their universities.

Scholarship Worth
The Programme covers all relevant expenses during students’ study period, including tuition fees, health and living costs as determined by the IDB.

Annual Time-table
The Programme is announced through the Counterpart Organizations in beneficiary countries and follows a 12-month cycle of academic and logistic activities every year. The schedule is drawn on the basis of academic calendars of universities and institutions where IDB students will study. The timetable is as follows:
January: Announcement
June- December: Deadline for submission of applications to the IDB (for in-country studies)
May-July: Deadline for submission to the IDB (for abroad studies)
Note: Applications must be submitted to the Counterpart Organization and not directly to the IDB.

How to apply
In countries, where the Programme is being implemented, inquiries can be made and application form obtained from Counterpart Organization in the country.
In a country, where the Programme has not yet been implemented, inquiries may be directed to the Scholarship Division, Department of Communities in Non-Member Countries, IDB.

Selection procedures
Each year, the Programme follows the following selection procedures:
The Counterpart Organization announces the Programme in the country and invites applications from potential candidates who fulfill the criteria of the Programme.
The Scholarship Selection Committee (SSC) conducts the interviews of eligible candidates and recommends them through the Counterpart Organization to the IDB.
The IDB makes the final selection and informs the Counterpart Organizations.

IDB M.Sc. Scholarship Programme for Selected Least Developed Member Countries (LDMCs)
The objective of the M.Sc. is to assist Selected LDMCs in the development of their human resources in science and technology that are both relevant and necessary for their socio-economic development.
The Programme is open only to students from the 20 Selected LDMCs..
Eligibility Criteria
The Applicants must meet the above eligibility criteria including:
• Be a citizen of any of a Selected Least Developed Member Country.
• Age not over 30 years.
• Be a graduate in science/technology with a grade above Good in his/her academic career.
• Be determined to return home at the end of his/her studies.
• Be medically fit and be willing to undergo medical tests after selection.

Courses of study
Students may apply only for Science, Engineering, Technology, Medical Sciences, Statistics, Demography, Econometrics, Operational Research and other related fields.

The scholarship covers the following benefits and entitlements:
• All academic expenses
• Living allowances
• Health Insurance
• Round trip air-tickets to and from place of study
• Conference Participation allowance
• Computer allowance

Annual Time-table
The Programme is announced every year through the IDB Governors’ Offices in the countries concerned. The timetable is as follows:
September – Announcement of the Programme
December 31 – Deadline for submission of applications to the Office of H.E. the IDB Governor for your country
How to apply
Application form can be downloaded here. The applications must be submitted to the Office of the IDB Governor for the country. It is the Office of the IDB Governor that will forward the applications to the IDB and not the individual applicants or the nominating institutions. Applications sent directly to the IDB will not be considered.

List of Selected Least Developed Member Countries (LDMCs)

Afghanistan, Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Comoros, Djibouti, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Palestine, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Togo, Uganda and Yemen

The IDB Merit Scholarship Programme for High Technology (MSP)

The objective of the programme is to develop technically qualified human resources in the IDB member countries by providing scholarships to promising and outstanding scholars and researchers to undertake advanced studies and research in the fields of appli
ed science and technology needed for the development of the member countries.
The Programme offers scholarships for study and research at two levels: (i) 3-year Ph.D. study/ research, and (ii) 6-12 months of Post-Doctoral research.
The concept is to assist the needs of the IDB member countries and their institutions in developing high quality and hi-tech human resources in science and technology areas that they are lacking but crucial for their development.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must meet the following basic criteria:
• Age not over (a) 35 years for Ph.D. study, and (b) 40 years for Post-Doctoral research;
• Attached to a research/academic/development institution in science and technology in their respective country;
• Must possess the required academic background in the related field of their proposed study/research and have some professional/research experience in the respective field;
• Demonstrate that the research proposal has scientific and technological relevance with the objective of meeting the priority development needs of the country;
• Have good command of the language of the institution of study and the ability to conduct scientific work in it.
Courses of Study
Fields of studies under the programme are determined by the priority needs of the country’s development in science and technology sectors and to supplement the IDB vision 1440H. Current focus is thus on the following fields of studies:
Health/medicine, Agriculture/Food production, Water Resources/ Desertification, Energy/Infrastructure Development, Nanotechnology, Development-focused ICT, and pure Science subjects

Place of Study
The selected candidates are to pursue their research and study at the top most reputable academic and research institutions worldwide.

How to apply
Download application form for 3-Year Ph.D. study or application form for Post-Doctoral Research. The applications must be submitted through the nominating institutions to the Office of the IDB Governor for the country. It is the Office of the IDB Governor that will forward the applications to the IDB and not the individual applicants or the nominating institutions.
