The Royal Society Wolfson Fellowship 2025 is a prestigious five-year funding program jointly funded by the Royal Society and the Wolfson Foundation, designed to recruit and support internationally leading researchers to relocate to the UK. It aims to strengthen research excellence across UK institutions in the natural sciences, including biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and engineering.

It’s ideal for mid- or senior-career researchers based outside the UK who have secured a job offer from a UK university or not-for-profit research institution.

Who Can Apply?

You’re eligible if you:

  • Are a mid-career or senior researcher with a strong international research track record (e.g. high-impact publications, keynote lectures, leadership roles)
  • Are currently based outside the UK
  • Have a confirmed employment offer from a UK university or not-for-profit research institute
  • Conduct research in the natural sciences
  • Are of any nationality
  • Are eligible to apply for a Global Talent Visa (fast-track endorsement)

How are Applicants Selected?

  1. Nomination by the Vice Chancellor (or equivalent) at your UK host institution
  2. Eligibility checks
  3. Scientific peer review and assessment by subject experts
  4. Panel review to finalize funding decisions

Shortlisting is based on scientific excellence, potential contribution to UK research, and institutional fit.

How Many Fellowships Are Available?

🔁 The scheme runs in multiple rounds per year. Round 2 of 2025 is currently open, with no fixed number of awards – selection is based on merit.

What is the Benefit of the Fellowship?

💷 Up to £300,000 over five years to cover:

  • Salary enhancement (up to 20% of your total salary)
  • Research expenses (equipment, consumables, fieldwork, visa costs, travel)
  • PhD studentships and/or research assistance
  • Relocation and visa costs (for the researcher and their family)
  • Flexibility to exceed the cap for justified relocation/visa costs
  • Career development support: leadership, public engagement, science communication
  • Flexible working support: part-time, parental leave, sick leave, and childcare at conferences
