Tell Me About The University of Florence SHARE_Africa Fellowship:
The SHARE_Africa PhD Research Scholarships support 12 PhD students to conduct research aligned with the priorities of the EU structural missions and the Science Technology, and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2024). The program fosters research collaboration between African and Italian universities, offering candidates the opportunity to participate in visiting research periods within Italian or African research groups. Each selected student will receive a grant of โฌ14,000 to cover travel, visa, health insurance, subsistence, and accommodation costs during a six-month mobility period.
Which Fields are Eligible?
Candidates must select a research topic within one of the following thematic areas aligned with SHARE_Africaโs blended intensive courses for 2025/26:
- Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism
- Innovative Technologies for Sustainable Water Management
- One Health, Global Health, Planetary Health
- Precision Agriculture and Sustainable Food
- Strategic Energy Planning and Industrial Ecology for Local Sustainable and Just Development
- Sustainable Business for New Challenges
Research topics must also align with the STISA-2024 priority sectors: agriculture, health, ICT, energy, environment, and strategic priorities, including industrialization, human capital, frontier technology, science diplomacy, private sector engagement, youth, and gender.

Who can Apply for the University of Florence SHARE_Africa Fellowship:
Also, to be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be enrolled in a PhD program at one of the eligible African universities (Annex 1) or one of the six Italian partner universities, with at least one year remaining until graduation.
- Candidates must demonstrate multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research interests aligned with the program goals.
- Proficiency in English for effective communication (spoken and written).
- Priority is given to incoming students (those coming to Italy) but outgoing students (those traveling to Africa) are also eligible.
How are Applicants Selected?
Applicants are evaluated based on:
- Commitment to pursuing research aligned with the program priorities.
- Willingness to extend knowledge beyond their field of study.
- Willingness to train undergraduates at their home institutions.
- English communication skills.
- The evaluation includes an assessment of application documents and a video interview by the Selection Committee.
- Equal opportunity and support are given to candidates with fewer opportunities, including female PhD candidates with childcare responsibilities or physical disabilities.

- Motivation letter (max 1 page, in English) explaining reasons to participate
- Support letter from PhD supervisor/tutor (max 1 page, in English)
- Research project proposal (max 1 page, in English) indicating host university
- Acceptance letter from the hosting department (max 1 page, in English)
- Additional documents (max 2 pages, in English) highlighting innovation experience or training roles

What is the Benefit of the University of Florence SHARE_Africa Fellowship?
Additionally, each awarded student receives a grant of โฌ14,000 to cover:
- Travel expenses
- Visa costs
- Health insurance
- Accommodation and subsistence costs during the six-month research mobility period
The grant is paid in three instalments throughout the mobility period.
