The METI Japan Internship Program 2025, organized by Japanโ€™s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, offers foreign human resources from developing countries the opportunity to engage in internships with Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises. The program aims to promote the internationalization of Japanese companies, support overseas business expansion, and build global networks through internships. It includes both in-person and online internship formats and offers full support, training, and allowances for participants. The program connects talented students and professionals with Japanese companies for a cross-cultural, practical experience that could lead to long-term employment opportunities in Japan.

Who can Apply for the METI Japan Internship Program?

Applicants must meet all the following criteria:

  • Have the nationality of a country on the OECD/DAC list (excluding the Peopleโ€™s Republic of China).
  • Not currently residing in Japan.
  • Aged between 18 and 40 years old as of August 25, 2025.
  • Currently enrolled in or graduated from a junior college, technical college, or higher education institution.
  • Able to provide certificates (enrollment or graduation) and a letter of recommendation.
  • Hold a certain level of English or Japanese proficiency (JLPT N3 or above or equivalent English test).
  • Must not have participated in this program between 2016 and 2024.
  • Able to fully commit to the internship activities on scheduled dates.
  • Willing to work in Japan, even if currently employed in another country.

How are Applicants Selected?

  • Initial screening and first interview (in Japanese or English) conducted by the Japan office.
  • Submission of required documents, including certificates and letters of recommendation.
  • Matching is done based on the applicant’s experience, preferences, and the companyโ€™s requirements.
  • The optional second interview with the host company.
  • The final decision is made after mutual agreement and confirmation by the secretariat.

Required Documents

Applicants are to submit the following:

  • Certificate of enrollment or graduation.
  • Letter of recommendation from affiliated university or faculty.
  • Language proficiency test results (e.g., JLPT, IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, CEFR).
  • Other supporting certificates as requested.

Which Countries Are Eligible?

Nationals of countries listed on the OECD/DAC list of ODA recipients, excluding the Peopleโ€™s Republic of China. Applicants residing in countries other than their nationality are eligible, except those currently in Japan.

Where will the Award be Taken?

  • In-person internships: Conducted at Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises.
  • Online internships: Conducted remotely from the participantโ€™s home or workspace under the host companyโ€™s direction.

What is the Benefit of the METI Japan Internship Program?

All Interns Receive:

  • Various training sessions: cross-cultural understanding, business Japanese, career training, etc.
  • Internship insurance (contract performance, liability, and personal accident insurance)

Online Course:

  • Support for internet, PC, and communication tools.
  • 1,000 yen/day allowance (paid in local currency based on internship days)

In-Person Course (Coming to Japan):

  • Round-trip airfare (economy class)
  • Visa assistance and travel insurance
  • Accommodation and transportation during training
  • 3,000 yen/day allowance
  • Mobile phone rental
  • Host companies provide accommodation and company transport

How to Apply:

  • Visit the internship entry form on the programโ€™s official website.
  • Register with your email address to receive a provisional registration link.
  • Complete the full registration by submitting the required information.
  • Undergo screening and interviews as part of the selection and matching process.
  • Upon mutual agreement with a host company and final confirmation, receive a notification of acceptance.
  • A contract will be executed between the intern, the company, and the secretariat (online courses involve separate contracts).
