The United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme is organized by the Codification Division of the UN Office of Legal Affairs. It provides high-quality training for government officials, academics, and legal professionals—particularly from developing countries and emerging economies—on core topics of international law. The fellowship promotes deeper understanding of international legal frameworks and fosters cooperation among participants.

The fellowship covers seminars and lectures on:

Who can Apply?

Applicants must:

  • Have a legal background with professional experience in international law.
  • Submit a medical certificate of good health and certify ability to attend the entire course.
  • Be fluent in English or French (2026 session conducted in English).
  • Be nominated by their institution with a Letter of Transmission signed by a senior official.

How are Applicants Selected?

  • Selection considers qualifications, professional duties, relevance of training, geographical distribution, and gender balance.
  • Priority is given to candidates from Member States with no recent fellowship recipients.
  • Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
