Tell Me About The SADC Media Awards Competition:

The SADC Media Awards competition, launched by the Secretariat of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), invites journalists from SADC Member States to participate in its 2025 competition across four categories: Photo, Print, Television, and Radio Journalism. Established in 1996, these awards aim to recognize outstanding media work that effectively disseminates information about SADC, thereby supporting regional cooperation, integration, and development. Winners in each category will receive a first prize of US$2,500, while runners-up will be get US$1,000.

Who can Apply For The SADC Media Awards Competition?

Also, the eligibility criteria are below:

  • Entries must be published or broadcast between January and December 2024 by a registered or authorized media house or agency. Alternatively, they must appear on the website of such an organization in any SADC Member State.
  • Submissions should focus on themes promoting Regional Integration in the SADC region. They are to cover topics such as infrastructure, economy, water, culture, sports, and agriculture.
  • All media practitioners who are nationals of SADC countries are eligible to enter, except for those employed by institutions contracted by SADC and the staff of the SADC Secretariat.
  • All entries must be in one of the SADC working languages: English, Portuguese, French, or any national indigenous language. Each submission must include a transcript in one of the three working languages (English, French, or Portuguese).

How are Applicants Selected?

  • The National Adjudication Committee in each Member State will evaluate entries and select the best submission in each of the four categories: Print, Radio, Television, and Photojournalism.
  • The Regional Adjudication Committee (RAC) will judge the best regional entries, and its decision will be final.

  • Full contact details of the entrant, including a passport-sized photograph, physical address, telephone number, and email address.
  • For Print Journalism: Articles with a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 2,000 words are published in newspapers, newsletters, or magazines.
  • For Radio Journalism: Broadcast material with a duration between 1 minute and 30 minutes, submitted on a CD or USB, along with an electronic transcript in Word format.
  • For Television Journalism: Broadcast material with a duration between 1 minute and 45 minutes, submitted on a CD or USB, along with an electronic transcript in Word format.
  • For Photojournalism: One photo or a pictorial spread of up to 20 photos published in a single issue, accompanied by the original newspaper in which they were published.

Additionally, the prizes include:

  • First prize winners in each category will receive US$2,500.
  • Runners-up in each category will receive US$1,000.
  • Winners will receive certificates signed by the SADC Chairperson.
  • Prizes will be paid directly to the winners, with arrangements made for those unable to attend the ceremony to receive their awards in their home country.
  • The RAC reserves the right not to award a prize if entries do not satisfactorily meet the competition requirements.

How to Apply:

  • Interested participants should submit their entries to the National Adjudication Committee by February 29, 2025.
  • Entry forms and further information are available from the National Adjudication Committees, SADC Media Coordinators (NMCs) in each Member State, and the SADC website at www.sadc.int. A list of NMCs is at SADC Media Coordinators.
