All international freshmen and transfer students who gain admission to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities are considered for a Global Excellence Scholarship (GES). Awards are competitive and based on academic merit. Students selected for the GES awards are among the best in their high school class and show a record of very strong academic preparation.

Also, there is no separate scholarship application available; undergraduate students are automatically considered for the GES based on an overall assessment of their on-time application for admission into the University of Minnesota. All awards are made at the time of admission, so continuing students who were not initially awarded are not eligible to apply.

Additionally, eligible applicants must ensure they meet the following criteria:

  • Must be an international student.
  • Must have secured admission into an undergraduate degree program at the University of Minnesota.
  • Scholarships are available for all undergraduate courses at the University.
  • Selection is based on academic excellence.
  • Must enroll full-time in the Honors program during the scholarship semester.
  • Must demonstrate exceptional personal success skills, such as emotional maturity, motivation, and perseverance.
  • Must provide a high school transcript and/or GSE results, with a certified translation if not in English.
  • Must possess a high school certificate or its equivalent.
  • Must be highly motivated, responsible, and capable of working independently in a structured environment.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must have received an offer for a full-time program at the University of Minnesota, USA.
