Who can Apply?

Interested applicants must meet the following requirements: 

  • The Harvard Academy Scholars Program is open to students from all over the world.
  • Open to individuals who have recently completed or are near completing a PhD or equivalent doctoral program (including SJD and DPhil) in the social sciences.
  • Candidates must be promising in their academic careers​.
  • There is a preference for those knowledgeable in the foreign language, history, and culture of different countries​.
  • Only scholars in social sciences and law are eligible​​.
  • Must be within two years of the program’s start date (August 1, 2027). Therefore, for the application deadline of September 20, 2024, the PhD is after July 31, 2023​.
  • PhD candidates near dissertation completion must submit degree conferral documentation from their university registrar by June 30, 2027, for the August 1, 2027 start date​​.
  • Finalists must attend a personal interview in December 2024, with Harvard Academy covering travel and hotel expenses​.

What is the Benefit of the Award Harvard Academy Scholars Program

Successful applicants will enjoy the following benefits:

  • Postdoctoral Academy Scholars will be compensated with an annual stipend of up to $80,000.
  • Two-year residence at Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies.
  • Financial assistance for research and travel expenses will be supplemented by an already-paid stipend.

How to Apply:

All application materials must be submitted by the deadline of September 18, 2026. The completed application will include:

  • Curriculum vitae (CV); including list of publications
  • Research proposal (2000 words maximum); including intellectual objectives and planned methodological and disciplinary work
  • One scholarly writing sample, for example, a PhD dissertation chapter or peer-reviewed journal article. Co-authored texts are acceptable provided each author’s contribution is clearly specified and authorship is not shared with an academic advisor. This should be in English and no longer than fifty pages.
  • A copy of your PhD program transcript
  • Three letters of recommendation (uploaded directly and confidentially by the recommender through the online application—please note you will need to submit your application before an upload link is sent to your recommender, so plan accordingly)
