Tell Me About The Fellowship

The Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellowships at UBC are prestigious awards funded by the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies. They support outstanding scholars from around the world to engage in innovative research, enhance interdisciplinary collaborations, and establish themselves as leaders in academia and beyond.

Which Fields are Eligible

Available for most fields of research across UBC faculties. Applicants must propose a project that demonstrates originality and potential significance.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must:

  • Have completed all PhD requirements within 24 months of fellowship start date.
  • Not have pursued PhD studies at UBC.
  • Not currently hold a tenure‑track or continuing faculty position.
  • Provide justification if already in a UBC postdoctoral appointment.
  • Be citizens of any country (must meet Canadian immigration requirements).
  • Have a proposed supervisor who is a continuing faculty member with a tenure‑track appointment at UBC.

How Are Fellows Selected

Evaluation criteria:

  • Excellence in scholarly work and independent research (60%)
  • Quality of proposed research project (30%)
  • Personal qualities (10%) – integrity, collegiality, leadership, communication skills. Preference is given to applicants who have not already held a postdoctoral fellowship.

Which Countries are Eligible

  • Global – open to all nationalities.

Where Will the Fellowship Be Taken

  • University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver or Okanagan campus, Canada.

How Many Fellows

  • 4–6 new awards annually.

What is the Benefit of the Fellowship

  • $60,000 annual stipend (maximum of two years).
  • Research supervision and mentorship from UBC faculty.
  • Opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking interdisciplinary research.

How Long Will the Fellowship Last

  • Up to 2 years.
