The deadline for the application for the METI Government Internships in Japan for Students from Developing Countries is June 30th, 2024.
Internship Benefits
The internship opportunity comes with various benefits to include the following:
- Training: Includes pre-internship training covering business overviews and work culture.
- Travel and Accommodation: Airfare and housing arrangements are provided.
- Stipend: 3,000 yen per day for in-person; 1,000 yen per day equivalent for online internships.

Eligibility Requirement for the METI Government Internships in Japan
Candidates must meet the following requirements to be considered for the internship position:
- You must be a national of a country on the OECD/DAC list (excluding the People’s Republic of China).
- Language Skills: Proficiency in Japanese (JLPT N3 or higher) or in English.
- Age: Applicants should be aged 18 to 40 as of August 1, 2024.
- Educational Status: Students must provide a certificate of enrollment and a letter of recommendation. Graduates must provide a graduation certificate and a recommendation letter.
- Availability: Ability to dedicate full-time to the internship as per the program’s schedule.
- Other Qualifications: IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL, CEFR, or JLPT certifications are required.
- Previous Participation: Applicants should not have participated in the program from FY2016 to FY2023.
Available Internship Options
There are two internship options open for interested applicants:
- In-Person Internships: Work on-site at small to medium-sized Japanese companies.
- Online Internships: Participate remotely from your home country.
Expectations and Responsibilities
Successful applicants are expected to carry out the following responsibilities:
- Develop an internship plan (intern’s role, goal, etc.) through discussions with the internship manager
- Participate in pre-training, follow-up training, and a wrap-up presentation
- Ensure personal safety and health management by taking responsibility for tasks such as regularly contacting, reporting to, and consulting with the program office and host company
- Submit various documents, notifications, reports, etc., before, during, and after the internship
- Participate in Japanese language classes whenever possible if offered a permanent position at the internship host company
- Exhibit appropriate behavior as a participant in a project funded by public funds from the Japanese government
