Tell Me About BIEA Bringing Research Home :

BIEA invites applications to our Bringing Research Home grant programme 2024-2025, for scholars who have recently completed doctoral research within the disciplines of humanities and social sciences in eastern Africa (in this case ‘recently’ is defined as up to 3 years after successful PhD defence / graduation). These dissemination-enabling grants provide the opportunity to return to the location of PhD research and present findings to the community/ies, and discuss further research potential with local stakeholders.

Who can Apply for BIEA Bringing Research Home?

To ensure legal adherence, applicants must have a formal affiliation with a recognized higher educational institution, or a national research/heritage organization, and must be able to secure their own institutional risk assessment. Because this grant does not support research, no research may be undertaken during the course of the supported activity and therefore no ethics approval or data management plan is required. Evidence of successful completion of the risk assessment must be provided to the BIEA before the grant will be released, which should be no later than the end of August 2024. The trip must be completed by end December 2024 at the latest. A full summary of expenditure of the grant, including scans of receipts, must be submitted to the BIEA within two weeks of the completion of the dissemination work. The BIEA’s financial accounting template should be used to submit the financial report, and applicants can also make use of the BIEA’s receipt temples while in the field. The form and receipt template can be found at https://biea.ac.uk/forms/

How are Applicants Selected?

BIEA’s funding awards are competitive, and we receive many more applications than we can fully fund. Your application must, therefore, make a clear and compelling case for why we should support your proposed dissemination activities. Your project also needs to be viable – that is, it has to be possible within the budget and time frame you have set out – and meet all relevant health and safety regulations.  Your budget outline needs to be realistic and should justify the amounts requested.  You must have a clear plan for dissemination.
