The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary-General’s Youth Advisory Board is a pioneering initiative designed to harness the potential of young individuals in shaping the future of global connectivity. Empowering Youth Voices

At the core of this initiative is the mission to provide young people with a direct voice within the ITU. Commencing its two-year term in February 2024, the inaugural Youth Advisory Board will be composed of outstanding individuals selected globally by the ITU Secretary-General.

Key Objectives of the Board

  1. Shaping ITU’s Vision: Provide youth perspectives on the future vision of ITU and its role in promoting equitable, affordable, universal, innovative, and safe connectivity.
  2. Narrowing the Digital Divide: Contribute ideas and recommendations to bridge the digital divide, utilizing technology for the greater good of society. Responsibilities may include researching innovative solutions, providing analysis, and collaborating with youth networks.
  3. Feedback on ITU’s Work: Provide youth feedback on ITU’s work programs, management approaches, and human resources development.
  4. Supporting ITU Initiatives: Actively support ITU initiatives and promote the organization’s work among youth worldwide.
  5. Insights on Technology: Share insights on the potential of information and communication technologies, emerging technologies, and ITU’s role in addressing existing gaps.

Composition of the Youth Advisory Board

The Youth Advisory Board will consist of 12 exceptional individuals from 6 ITU regions. These individuals, with expertise in various telecommunications-related topics, will explore areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum technology, the Internet of Things, cybersecurity, space sustainability, and the future of network technology.

Who can Apply?

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Age between 18 to 30.
  • Demonstrated achievements in promoting equitable, affordable, universal, innovative, and safe connectivity.
  • Leadership or contribution to STEM-related research, publications, or journals.
  • Affiliation with STEM youth-led movements, networks, organizations, or programs.
  • Knowledge of technology, international ICT policies, and regulations.
  • Expertise in STEM fields, with a focus on emerging technologies.
  • Advocacy for youth, technology, and Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Success in STEM-related projects, research, publications, or conference presentations.
  • Ability to serve in an individual capacity, leaving organizational and country affiliations aside.

Application Process and Timeline

  1. Phase 1 – Expression of Interest: Open call for expressions of interest. The deadline is January 12, 2024. Interested candidates can submit their expressions of interest here.
  2. Phase 2 – Member Selection: By February 18, 2024, members will be selected to join the ITU SG’s Youth Advisory Board.

Before submitting an expression of interest, candidates are encouraged to read the Terms of Reference document.
