About SANSA International Space Weather Camp: The International Space Weather Camp (ISWC) provides an incredible opportunity for students from South Africa, the USA, and Germany to learn about space weather, a relatively new and exciting field involving the study of the Sun and its influence on space and the Earth’s upper atmosphere as well as the impacts of solar events on space and ground-based technological systems that modern society relies on daily.

The Camp consists of a series of lectures, hands-on projects and other interesting activities. The lecture subject matter covers various aspects related to Space Weather, comprising cosmic ray particle transport theory, plasma physics, solar physics, heliospheric physics, computer simulations for modelling and understanding local Space Weather, and the impact on Earth’s atmosphere, satellites, and space.

The 2024 International Space Weather Camp will be hosted by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Germany, and the University of Alabama in Hunstville (UAH), USA, from 17 June to 12 July 2024.

Final year BSc Hon/BEng, MSc South African citizen or permanent resident students in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Electronics are invited to apply now for this exciting camp. Preference will be given to students with no space weather background.

Successful applicants will be fully funded to attend two weeks of lectures and practicals at each hosting facility (UAH, Hunstville, USA: 17 – 28 June and DLR, Neustrelitz, Germany: 1 – 12 July ). Funding includes return flights, visa, accommodation, meals and subsistence as well as airport transfers.

Value of SANSA International Space Weather Camp: Successful applicants will be fully funded to attend two weeks of lectures and practicals at each hosting facility (UAH, Hunstville, USA: 17 – 28 June and DLR, Neustrelitz, Germany: 1 – 12 July ). Funding includes return flights, visa, accommodation, meals and subsistence as well as airport transfers.

Note: Successful applicants MUST have a valid passport for travel to Germany and the US by 11 March 2024 in order to be eligible to apply for visas to these countries. Due to the large number of applications we receive for the ISWC, we cannot reply to everyone. Therefor if you do not hear from us within one month of the closing date, please consider your application unsuccessful.
