Tell Me About Award:

The #KeepItOn Advocacy Fellow will participate in and amplify the #KeepItOn campaign to fight internet shutdowns. This Advocacy Fellow will work primarily in the #KeepItOn campaign fighting internet shutdowns globally. They will work directly under the supervision of our #KeepItOn Campaign Manager, and will support the team’s day-to-day planning and execution of campaigns and rapid response against internet shutdowns, support in writing joint statements/blog posts/open letters/publications, engaging with the #KeepitOn coalition members in response to shutdowns, and assist in cleaning up and updating the coalition’s members’ database. This fellowship provides an opportunity for the Advocacy Fellow to interact with and engage with over 300 civil society organizations from around the world as well as other relevant stakeholders. They will be immersed in a structured environment to foster growth and maximize learning potential, balancing mentorship and guidance with real-world experience of campaigns and rapid response, relationship building, and written contributions to the #KeepItOn campaign.

What you will do

  • Supporting, participating and contributing to discussions regarding the planning and execution of campaigns and other actions related to the fight against internet shutdowns and other network disruptions;
  • Supporting the day-to-day activities of the #KeepitOn Campaign Manager in engaging with and sustaining partnership with the #KeepitOn community;
  • Contributing to the production of articles, analyses and open letters regarding key developments of internet shutdowns and related digital rights issues globally;
  • Contributing to writing of periodic and annual #KeepItOn reports looking at trends and developments of shutdowns globally;
  • Supporting in writing session proposals, meeting notes or briefings and organizing virtual events on shutdowns at forums such as RightsCon, IGF, FIFAfrica, DRIF etc;
  • Review, update and clean up the #KeepitOn coalition’s membership database with contact details and website information of all coalition members particularly those that are inactive on the mailing list; 
  • Researching legal changes and initiatives that could potentially impact internet access globally; contributing to legal analysis of these developments for the campaign;
  • Researching and writing a blog highlighting the impact of shutdowns minority communities including women and or persons with disability around the globe at the end of the Fellowship
  • Any other duty assigned to them throughout the fellowship

Access Now seeks a motivated, organized, and reliable individual with a keen interest in digital rights. They must have demonstrated advocacy, communications, and writing skills, as well as the ability to be effective while working remotely and collaborating with a diverse global team.

  • Undergraduate degree in communications, political science, or related fields
  • A working/basic knowledge of campaigns, rapid response and advocacy strategies
  • Working proficiency in a language other than English spoken in communities impacted by internet shutdowns
  • Basic knowledge of digital rights advocacy issues surrounding human rights and technology, particularly related to connectivity and freedom of expression
  • Ability to respond rapidly to new or unexpected assignments
  • A commitment to excellence and to being a reliable, responsive, and accountable team member through the fellowship
  • Proficiency with office productivity suites

What is the Benefit of Award?

This is a full-time, six-month fellowship, estimated to operate between August 2023 and February 2024. Individuals who have experience with or connection to communities that have been impacted by internet shutdowns are especially encouraged to apply. At this time, a majority of Access Now team members are working remotely full time, with a few team members working from our offices in New York, Brussels, and Costa Rica. The successful fellow must possess the right to work in the location in which they will be based. We are unable to sponsor visas or relocations for this role.

Remuneration

Access Now offers competitive compensation packages that align competitively with locations and regions around the world. Location-specific examples of initial placement within the salary range for this role include:

  • KSh275,000 KES gross monthly (Kenya)
  • ₱80,000 PHP gross monthly (Philippines)
  • €4,000 EUR gross monthly (Europe)
  • $2,650 USD gross monthly (Costa Rica)
