The AFF was founded in 2006 in Accra Ghana by self-identified African feminists who wanted to create a regional platform to link feminist energies and initiatives. Members of the regional AFF have since gone on to create national Feminist Forums; hosting convenings and organising solidarity, advocacy and ongoing support space for feminist activists in and between countries. The AFF usually brings feminists together in a continental gathering, the last one being in Zimbabwe in 2016 under the theme “Voice, Power and Soul.” While conversations on the 5th AFF gathering had started in 2019 with the ambition to commune in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic effectively brought all arrangements to a halt. The Working Group of the AFF has now proposed the convening of regional forums to engage smaller numbers and to also enable regions to discuss issues that are more relevant to their contexts. The East African Regional Gathering is being convened in that regard. For the purposes of this convening East Africa is being defined as those hailing from/based in Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
