UNICEF H/Q Internship Programme 2021 for International Students
The UNICEF Internship Programme offers qualified and eligible students at Headquarters (HQ) the unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF’s work and the United Nations system under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.

About the Award: The internship will contribute to the UNICEF work plan in Health Systems Strengthening and Primary Health Care of the Health Section, around UNICEF and partners capacity for HSS, including quantitative and qualitative analysis, development of knowledge products, advocacy and policy briefs and review of annual and period reports in the relevant areas. The internship will also contribute to facilitating direct and virtual-based conversations with internal and external stakeholders towards the above tasks of the workplan.
UNICEF identified an important role for the organization in ensuring national systems are strong and resilient enough to provide sustainable quality services to those who need them, particularly children, as part of its strategy to achieve its strategic goals, and in response to global imperatives such as the Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage.
The documentation of programmatic actions in specific areas or work drawn from HSS Learning Program trainees and graduates at country, regional and headquarter levels will contribute to support staff work on HSS and PHC towards UHC to meet UNICEFs strategic goals of ending preventable maternal, new-born and child deaths and promoting the health and development of all children and reducing inequities in health.
The intern undertaking this assignment will work within the HSS unit in the Health Section, Programme Division at UNICEF HQ, and will report to and work under the direct supervision of the HSS Health Specialist, to support HSS unit engagement on capacity building.
Main duties and Tasks:
- Development of HSS knowledge products
- Support documentation through research and analysis on good practices and support dissemination of such practices through relevant products and processes including seminars, webinars and relevant channels and products, including the documentation of experiences from UNICEF HSS blended learning program 2021 trainees and former years graduates concerning specific HSS areas of work, such as human resources and supply chain strengthening
- Advocacy and policy briefs: update the infographic on HSS Learning program for internal audience and external partners
- Keep HSS learning site SharePoint, and track Yammer group
- Support the follow up of HSS 2021 blended Learning program trainees
- Attend internal UNICEF seminars and meetings, as relevant, which provide an opportunity to meet leading public health experts and reflect upon issues, trends and strategies shaping contemporary global health policies and practice
- Support Unit Chief in monitoring progress of GFF ItS projects and regular governance meetings with GFF and the funding partners.

- Currently be enrolled in a degree programme in an undergraduate or graduate school, pursuing the Graduate study in public health, social work, or related field, based in New York or be a recent graduate (within the last 2 years).
- Should have an excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
- Knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications; excellent knowledge of MS Office including MS Excel is required.
- Experience with documentation of public health programs implementation
- Experience in Child related work is an asset.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
- Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in other UN languages an asset especially Spanish or French.

Value of Award: The intern will have the opportunity to understand better UNICEF work at global and country level through the interaction with UNICEF staff and partners based at global, regional and country level. The internship programme is also offered as part of the learning experience
In accordance to UNICEF’s guidelines, interns will be paid a stipend based on US $1,700 per month (full time) [$1020 per month based on 3 days in a week]. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.
UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start the internship with the Education Section.
Living Conditions and Working Environment:
The intern will be remote based and work from home. The intern will work with the Health Section and report to the supervisor of this internship. The intern is not expected to travel during the assignment. The intern will be expected to participate in section meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the intern, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.
Duration of Award: May – December 2021 (part time – 3 days in a week). Max duration of a full-time internship is 26 weeks.
