University of Victoria MSc Opportunity – Remote Sensing & Wildfire (Victoria, Canada)

Spread the love

The University of Victoria is offering a funded two-year MSc opportunity in Remote Sensing & Wildfire, starting in Fall 2027. Importantly, the application deadline is Nov 15, 2026. Selected students will join the Remote Sensing & AI Lab in the Department of Geography and work on wildfire severity mapping using satellite time series and LiDAR.

Application Deadline:

  • Expression of Interest (EOI) Deadline: 15 November 2026 (To contact Dr. Ji Won Suh prior to formal Fall 2027 university application).

Tell Me About The Program:

The Remote Sensing & AI Lab in the Department of Geography at the University of Victoria (UVic), Canada, is recruiting a Master of Science (MSc) student to begin in Fall 2027. This 2-year funded graduate assistantship focuses on mapping and quantifying wildfire severity using satellite time series and LiDAR 3D forest structure. The research will integrate dense Landsat time series with airborne and spaceborne LiDAR observations to characterize fire-induced changes in forest structure and examine relationships between spectral burn severity and structural forest change.

Which Fields are Eligible:

  • Geography, Remote Sensing, GIS, Geomatics, Forest Ecology, Wildfire Science, Environmental Science, Earth Science, or related disciplines.

Type:

Funded Master’s Degree Assistantship (Research Assistantship / Teaching Assistantship)

Who can Apply:

  • Degree Requirement: Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Forestry, Geomatics, Earth Science, or a related field by Fall 2027.
  • Core Interests: Strong interest in remote sensing, GIS, forest ecology, wildfire science, and environmental monitoring.
  • Desirable Skills: Previous experience with remote sensing, LiDAR, GIS, programming languages (Python or R), Google Earth Engine, or geospatial data analysis is desirable (but not strictly required).

How are Applicants Selected:

Candidates are evaluated based on academic performance demonstrated through transcripts, alignment of research interests in wildfire and remote sensing, relevant background/technical experience, and a review of submitted CVs and personal statements by the Principal Investigator. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit a formal application to the UVic Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Which Countries Are Eligible:

Global (Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international applicants).

Where will the Program be Taken:

Remote Sensing & AI Lab, Department of Geography, University of Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

How Many Fellows / Grantees:

1 Master of Science (MSc) Graduate Student position.

What is the Benefit of the Program:

  • Funding Package: Full 2-year funding provided through research assistantships (RA) and/or teaching assistantships (TA).
  • Research Infrastructure: Hands-on experience working with advanced satellite time series, 3D LiDAR data, and AI/geospatial analytics in forest ecology and wildfire science.
  • Mentorship: Direct research supervision under Dr. Ji Won Suh in a leading Canadian remote sensing laboratory.

How Long Will it Last:

2 Years (Full-time MSc degree starting Fall 2027).

How to Apply:

  1. Prepare your application materials in digital format:
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV) highlighting academic achievements and relevant skills.
    • Unofficial Academic Transcripts.
    • Brief Statement of Interest: Describing your research interests and relevant experience in remote sensing or wildfire science.
  2. Email your document package directly to Dr. Ji Won Suh at [email protected].
  3. Submit your Expression of Interest no later than 15 November 2026.
