Applications are open for the Carnegie Mellon University Africa Business Incubation Program 2026/2027. This 12-month opportunity supports tech founders in Africa who already have proof-of-concept prototypes and early validation. Importantly, the application deadline is May 20, 2026.
The program helps startups build revenue-generating products and prepare for additional investment. In addition, selected teams receive $50,000 USD in seed funding, advisory support, cloud credits, and introductions to investors and partners.

About the Grant
The Business Incubation Program is offered by Carnegie Mellon University Africa through its innovation hub. It is designed for early-stage, tech-enabled startups in Africa that are less than two years old at the time of application.
The program focuses on ventures with scalable solutions, functional prototypes, and a clear market opportunity. As a result, founders can strengthen product development, market readiness, compliance, growth planning, and investment preparation.
Eligibility
- Startup must be less than two years old at the time of application.
- The startup must be building a scalable, tech-enabled solution addressing a clearly defined market opportunity across Africa.
- The team must have a proof-of-concept prototype with early validation.
- The venture must show a clear path to profitability, scalability, and inclusive impact.
- Applicants must demonstrate strong market understanding and a credible business model.
- The startup must be led by at least two committed co-founders.
- Co-founders must be able to dedicate full-time effort to the venture and program.
- The business must be a registered company.
- Marketplaces, including e-commerce and middleman platforms, are not eligible.
- Late-stage startups that have raised significant capital and earn consistent revenue are not eligible.
- Startups without job-generation potential are not eligible.
- Non-tech enabled startups are not eligible.
- Startups without a functional prototype are not eligible.
- Startups that have completed more than two similar programs in the past 12 months are not eligible.
Grant Amount: $50,000 USD in seed funding
Project Duration: 12 months
Funding Scope $50,000 USD in seed funding from CMU-Africa, plus 12 months of targeted advisory support, $5,000 in AWS credits, $1,500 in Amazon technical support, introductions to angel investors, VC firms, and partners in Africa and Pittsburgh, and access to CMU-Africa’s partner ecosystem and global entrepreneurship networks.
How to Apply
Interested founders should complete the online application form before the deadline. After the written application review, shortlisted teams may be invited to pitch virtually. If admitted, selected participants must confirm participation by June 5.
Before you apply, make sure your startup meets the full eligibility requirements and that both co-founders can commit full-time to the venture and the program.
