The Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of South Africa is offering funded traineeships for young graduates in 2026. These traineeships are based in Pretoria and will run for up to 6 months, with a tentative start date in June 2026. Importantly, the application deadline is 13 April 2026.
This opportunity is within the Political, Press and Information Section. Selected trainees will receive a monthly grant to cover living expenses. However, travel, visa, insurance, and accommodation costs must be borne by the trainee.

About the Internship
This internship is designed for young graduates interested in political affairs, public diplomacy, research, and communications. Specifically, the placement is within the Political, Press and Information Section of the EU Delegation to the Republic of South Africa.
The traineeship focuses on supporting the Delegation’s political analysis, reporting, public outreach, and alumni engagement work. As a result, interns will gain exposure to EU-South Africa relations and the Delegation’s day-to-day activities.
Responsibilities
- Analyse the current and foreseen dynamics of the EU-South Africa partnership
- Monitor political developments in South Africa and South African foreign affairs and contribute to drafting political reports
- Conduct short-term and longer-term research on issues in foreign affairs, domestic political affairs, and human rights
- Collate information on EU legislation and politics relevant to South Africa for dissemination to the wider public
- Attend and report on public events, seminars and conferences
- Provide administrative support to public diplomacy events and visits organized by the Delegation and from Headquarters
- Support social media efforts by proposing and drafting social media posts
- Support coordination with EU Member States, including preparing and reporting on meetings with EU counsellors
- Support the EU Delegation’s alumni efforts, including following up on the EU Alumni strategy and managing the alumni platform and database
Eligibility Requirements
- Applicants currently residing in the Republic of South Africa will only be considered
- Must have the right to work in the Republic of South Africa or a valid work permit
- At least a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Law, Social Studies, Politics, Economics or similar subject
- Excellent English, written and spoken
- Excellent writing and research skills
- Must be committed and able to complete tasks within set deadlines
- Traineeships can only be offered in compliance with local legislation as well as the legislation of the country of origin
Skills Preferred: Excellent English, written and spoken; excellent writing and research skills; ability to complete tasks within deadlines; eagerness to learn and contribute; additional language skills and an additional degree are assets.
