University of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo is a successor of Tokyo Imperial University first founded in 1886 and existed before going into extinction in 1947. The University of Tokyo came into existence as the first Japanese institution of higher learning and was formed on a western education style. The university started with three schools namely Western medicine, Chinese classics, and western studies and remained that way till the great fire and earthquake of 1923.

The university saw a rebranding and reorganization in 1947 and 1949 after the Second World War. Included in the newly branded institution is an institute for research in cellular and molecular biology, nuclear studies, earthquakes, historiography and many programs and departments that make the institution stand out.
