Heriot Watt University

Heriot-Watt University is a public research institution which is located in Edinburgh, Scotland. The institution was established in 1821 and it currently has five campuses and also runs distance learning programmes for students around the world. Its main campus is located at Riccarton. The Heriot-Watt university name was coined by Scottish inventor James Watt and philanthropist, George Heriot. Heriot-Watt University was named International University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.

There are six different schools within Heriot-Watt University and these are:

  1. Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay Global Scholarship Programme

This scholarship is offered in honor of a Malaysian businessman and noble philanthropist the late YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Yeoh Tiong Lay. The Heriot-Watt University hosts the scholarship award, and its aim is to gain access to quality UK higher education for Malaysians.

Malaysian citizens with proof of the financial need to pursue higher education

  1. Heriot-Watt University undergraduate scholarship

The scholarship is offered by the Heriot-Watt University for international undergraduate students to study in any of the schools in the university. The scholarship is to be taken in the UK at the Heriot Watt university.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be international students, not EU to be eligible for the Undergraduate degree programmes.
  • The scholarship is based on academic merit, but financial need will be taken into consideration for the higher value scholarships.
  • Applicants must have an offer of a place to study with Heriot-Watt University in the UK.
  • Proof of English language proficiency is needed.
  1. Scholarship Name British Council / Heriot-Watt GREAT Scholarship

The scholarships are made available to support students enrolling in the university for Masters’s programmes. The Scholarship amounts to about £10,000 towards tuition fees and it is open to home and international students as well.

Eligibility

  • The scholarship is available for students from different nationals
  • This scholarship is available only for new full-time students.
  • The scholarship cannot be given in combination with any other Heriot-Watt scholarship award.

Eligibility criteria for the Undergraduate program

  • £24 application fee(non-refundable)
  • Official high school transcript
  • GCE or A-Level
  • Two reference letters
  • Statement of purpose not more than 500 words.
  • IELTS scores if the applicant’s native language is not English.

It is worthy of note that: eligibility criteria may vary for each undergraduate study program.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in the UK is not very high as it is very accommodating for students particularly. You can budget for approximately £2000-£2500 for each semester’s living expenses. It is important that before you decide to study in the UK, you must have prepared or had adequate finances for your studies and for throughout the duration of the study. For the accommodation, the fees vary depending on the type and location of the accommodation you choose. There are single occupancy and self-catered accommodation, there are also traditional rooms, contemporary rooms and studio flats which can be rented. For the accommodation fees including heating, power, and other personal effects may be about £5,000.
