Below is a list of fellowship programs that support career development and advancement: 

1. Fulbright Scholar Program

Students who want to study at universities in the United States should apply for the  Fulbright Foreign Student Program. The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is a research program funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York. Postgraduate students from eligible countries including Nigeria can apply. 

Benefits offered: The grant covers airplane fees, allowance, monthly stipends, housing allowance, book and supplies allowance, computer allowance, and basic health insurance.

2. Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program

Also, the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program is open for eligible candidates to apply as there are no age restrictions, college or university restrictions, country restrictions, or field of study restrictions. The program is targeted at graduate students who want to pursue their postgraduate degree at Stanford University. It also seeks to raise leaders passionate about problem-solving and providing creative solutions to complex societal issues. Receipts of the award have access to mentorship with thought leaders, study trips, and participation in leadership and development programs. 

Benefits: 3 years fellowship, living stipend, academic expenses, and a travel stipend for one annual trip to and from Stanford.

3. Chevening Scholarships

The Chevening Scholarship is also another international fellowship available to students who want to study in the United Kingdom. It is fully funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office and other partner organizations. Since its inception in 1983, over 50,000 professionals have had the opportunity to further develop themselves through the UK Chevening Scholarship opportunity. 

Additionally, it is open to students with leadership potential, a strong academic background, and ambitions who are willing to pursue a postgraduate degree in the United Kingdom.

4. TED Fellows Program

The TED Fellows Program is open to change-makers in various fields including inventors, advocates, filmmakers and photographers, musicians and artists, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, and human rights activists. They must have a proven track record of excellence in their field. Selected applicants will have access to career coaching and mentorship, public relations guidance, and media training. They will have the opportunity to attend a TED conference. This will provide an avenue to improve their skills and enhance their professional careers.

5. Mozilla Open Leaders Program

Additionally, the Mozilla Open Leaders Program is open to individuals who are passionate about Internet health and want to launch their open leaders program. The program aims to catalyze multiple community-run Open Leaders programs with diverse audiences to serve as entry points into the Internet health movement.

Benefits: selected participants will: 

  • Receive movement-building training & program-design mentorship from Mozilla staff and mentors.
  • Work closely with a Mozilla Champion to co-design an Open Leaders program that feeds into the broader Internet health movement.
  • Have access to a community of mentors, technologists, and more.
  • Get practical experience fueling your movement area at MozFest 2019 (London UK, Oct 25-27, travel stipends available). Mobilize attendees by sharing your vision, new program, and next steps in the Mozilla Zone.

6. Greenlining Institute Leadership Academy

Additionally, the Greenlining Institute Leadership Academy aims to train and nurture the next generation of social change leaders, using a hands-on approach to learning and teaching. The academy is affiliated with the Greenlining Coalition multi-ethnic coalition of nearly 40 African-American, Asian American, and Latino community-based organizations. Selected applicants have the opportunity to get trained in core leadership skills and work in coalitions across race and ethnic lines.

Benefits: Compensation for the year-long Fellows Program is $33,800, plus health benefits and a monthly commute stipend.

7. Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program

Also, the Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program is open to professionals who are interested in research. It is offered to graduate students, predoctoral students, and postdoctoral and senior investigators to conduct independent research and to utilize the resources of the Institution with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff serving as advisors and hosts. 

Benefits: The benefits are categorized according to the type of fellowship. They include: 

  • Smithsonian Graduate Fellowship: Fellows will receive a stipend of $8,000.
  • Pre-doctoral Fellowships: Fellows will receive a research allowance of up to $5,000 and a stipend of $42,000 annually.
  • Senior and Postdoctoral Fellowships: Fellows will receive up to $5,000 as research allowance along with a stipend of $55,000 annually.
  • Earth and Planetary Sciences fellows will receive up to $5,000 as a research allowance and an annual stipend of $60,000 under the fully funded fellowship in the USA.

8. Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and seeks to provide leadership development and professional collaboration to qualified applicants alongside their U.S. counterparts at select U.S. universities. The program is designed to provide broad professional enrichment through a combination of activities tailored to each fellow’s interests. 

Benefits: Payment of tuition and fees at the assigned host university; pre-academic English language training (if required); a maintenance (living) allowance, including a one-time settling-in allowance; accident and sickness coverage; a book allowance; a one-time computer subsidy; international travel to and from the U.S. for the program and domestic travel to required program events in the U.S.; a professional development allowance for professional activities, such as field trips, professional visits, and conferences.

9. Google PhD fellowship program 

The Google Ph.D. Fellowship is aimed at supporting graduates as they pursue their PhD and to connect them to a Google Research Mentor. This fellowship seeks to recognize outstanding students who are embarking on innovative and impact-driven research in the computer science field and other related areas. The next application date is in March 2024 and the duration of the fellowship opportunity is three years. 

Benefits offered: $30K which covers stipend and other research-related activities and travel expenses including overseas travel.

10. Acumen Fellowship Program

Finally, the Acumen Fellowship Program aims to bring together individuals who are passionate about working on problems of poverty and equips them with the knowledge, skills, and community to strengthen their leadership and the capacity of their ventures to scale and create meaningful change. Also, the fellowship is targeted at increasing the selected participant’s ability to lead social change and tackle problems of poverty to create a world based on dignity and the principles of moral leadership. The Fellowship looks for “builders” who are working to solve problems of poverty. Builders include Founders, CEOs, and senior leaders (COO, MD, etc.) at for-profit, nonprofit, or hybrid social enterprises, as well as corporate or government sector intrapreneurs. 

Benefits: Acumen covers all fellowship-related expenses during the fellowship year. This includes all costs associated with the seminars including lodging, food, transportation, and visas.
