Google Rise Science & Engineering Awards for Africa, Europe, Middle east & Asia 2011

The Google RISE Awards are now open for applications.
Google RISE (Roots in Science and Engineering) Awards are designed to promote and support Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and Computer Science (CS) education initiatives. Google provide awards to organizations working with primary & secondary schools and university students to provide enrichment programs in these fields.
Google believes that technology will continue to play an important role in shaping our future and knows that the youth of today will help innovate and drive these technologies for years to come. Through the Google RISE Awards Program, Google aspire to help students by offering growth and development opportunities.

Value of Award
Support may include a combination of monetary awards ranging from €500 to €10,000, volunteer resources and in-kind donations.

Eligibility
Organizations eligible for consideration include:

  • groups in the United States and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Asia) working to promote and support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), as well as CS education initiatives at the K-12 and University (US only) levels with an emphasis on increasing engagement of under-represented students.

Ideal K-12 (primary and secondary) & university STEM programs and projects should:

  • Inspire excitement about STEM and CS
  • Improve, advance and enrich students’ STEM and/or CS education
  • Include hands-on learning activities using CS

Applications are encouraged from Organizations and Educational Institutions regardless of the socio-economic status of the students they serve.
Eligible African Countries
Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Selection Criteria
A cross-functional team of Google volunteers will evaluate all applications based on the following criteria:

  • Track record of success (for established organizations)
  • Sustainability of project beyond Google funding period
  • Potential for dissemination and sharing of best practice (scalability)

How to Apply
All applicants will be asked to fill out a general application form and submit a detailed proposal up to three pages including organization and program description. Additional required documentation includes a program budget, and optionally, applicants can also submit a letter of reference or recommendation. The application process is subject to change.
