Application Tips for Engineering Scholarships

Even though scholarships are one of the most cost-effective ways to subsidize education in engineering, they are highly competitive, meaning that standing out is a must. But how does one create a standout application? Here’s a step-by-step breakdown to creating the application that will fund your future.

1. Strategize for success

A year to six months before the anticipated program starts, applicants should have a working list of engineering scholarships that are ideal for them, along with a breakdown of their deadlines and requirements. It seems like a long time, but with everything that life brings, six months is a comfortable window to work within.

2. Make a schedule

Creating a simple schedule is the first step to creating a successful application. For instance, the schedule might include notes like: “Two months out: List is finalized, and drafts are ready”.

3. Outline key points

After deciding which scholarships best suit you and your career goals, it’s time to put those goals on paper in a way that will show you are a driven and successful individual. Applicants who draw on their knowledge of the field and work experience set themselves apart and create an aura of potential success. Here is the time for the applicant to demonstrate that they are worth the investment.

4. Be profound

Personal statements are vital to show the reader that an applicant is a versatile person with a purpose behind his goals. A profound personal statement is a sure-fire way to differentiate an application from the masses. In general, a good place to start is by asking questions about the ways in which personal experiences influence the change the applicant wishes to see in the world.

5. Treat the scholarship like a job application

Relevant experience may make the difference between winning the scholarship and receiving a rejection letter. There is a certain level of competency that a stellar candidate will be able to display. Demonstrate that you have this by linking your future success to previous internships, jobs, and memberships in professional organizations.

Engineering Courses to Study Abroad

There are three main engineering disciplines that offer engineering degrees at most universities: these three major fields are civil engineering, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering.

  • Civil engineering

Civil engineering deals with naturally constructed structures, including bridges, buildings, roads, and other infrastructure projects.  Civil engineering is known as one of the oldest engineering firms.  Civil engineering is a great choice for international students because every aspect of the industry supports the study.  Civil engineers are employed in both the private and public sectors, and graduates work in construction and engineering firms in the private sector and government agencies in the public sector.  Most people identify architecture and civil engineering and will be absolutely right.  Design is a very important aspect of civil engineering.  Some of the most modern achievements in architecture have been built by civil engineers.  New York City’s new World Trade Centre building was designed and built using the best engineers.  Historical monuments such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris were also built by renowned engineers.

To be the best civil engineer, you need a degree from a recognized university.  Most colleges offer undergraduate civil engineering programs.  Many schools also offer graduate degrees as civil engineers for students who want to differentiate themselves and advance their education.

  • Chemical engineering

Chemical engineering combines key principles of engineering to apply in the physical sciences such as chemistry and biology.  This study attempts to design specific chemicals as an available means.  Chemical engineers often manage the engineering work of manufacturing plants, creating new machines for the chemical industry, and develop new products using compounds that are favourable to the public.  Chemical engineers are often employed by pharmaceutical companies, petrochemical companies and other engineering companies.  Together with this type of employer, engineers turn raw materials into useful products, such as medicines and fuels.  Chemical engineers want to make chemical processes more efficient and cost-effective and reduce contamination of their processes or products.  Chemical engineers often require a degree, so international students interested in this field should also consider graduate programs.

  • Mechanical Engineering

What is mechanical engineering? Mechanical engineering brings in the core principles of engineering like mathematics and physics and applies them to the design and manufacturing of mechanical products like engines and heavy machinery. Mechanical engineering is by far the broadest discipline, allowing students to work in a slew of different career opportunities. Mechanical engineers work for a number of different types of industries. These types of engineers can be seen working for motor companies designing and improving combustion engines, in manufacturing plants improving process and providing quality assurance to plants, and even working in the manufacturing of heavy equipment like sea vessels and tanks. Mechanical engineers always require an undergraduate degree. Many international students decide to study mechanical engineering because the degree is so versatile it often overlaps other forms of engineering and provides for great career outlooks.

Though these three branches are the most popular, there are certainly other areas a student may want to study. Other areas an international student would be interested in getting an engineering degree in include electrical engineering, computer engineering, aeronautical engineering, nuclear engineering, and materials engineering. So, what is engineering? Engineering is so broad it is really too hard to give a single answer!

There are many other branches of engineering too, but they are mainly combinations of above mentioned four engineering types. Some of the other branches of Engineering.

  • Agricultural engineering
  • Applied engineering
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Biomedical nanoengineering
  • Biological engineering
