Saturday 27th April 2019 was a day filled with excitement at After School Africa. We held the pilot phase of the Young African Explorers Program workshop targeted at secondary school leavers between the ages of 15 and 20.

400 people applied and 15 candidates were selected.

The programme is aimed towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

We envision a world where everyone gets the opportunity to succeed. And our goal aligns with the SDG 4.4: By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship.

In line target 4b of SDG 4: By 2020, substantially expand globally the number of scholarships available to developing countries…

we believe that while opportunities are available for young people to substantially increase relevant skills for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship, a lot of those who could benefit from these opportunities are not aware, let alone prepared to leverage them.

Since 2009, After School Africa have reached and informed millions of young Africans on funding opportunities around the world. And tens of thousands of people have benefited from these opportunities.

The #YAEProgram is designed to further equip young people with the knowledge and skills to leverage these opportunities.

The YAEP workshop, held on 27th April 2019, featured four sessions focused on four key areas, facilitated by seasoned professionals and award winners:

  1. Leadership Development – Mrs. Gloria Adaba, founder Thumbs Up Initiative and John Maxwell Certified Life Coach (facilitator)
  2. Beyond Academics – Community development/Extracurricular Activities – Mr. Gideon Olanrewaju, founder AREAi, Chair of The International Youth Coalition for Education (IYCE), and multi scholarship award winner (facilitator) including Chevening Scholarship
  3. Choosing a course of study – Mrs. Nancy Nwachukwu, Brand and Marketing Strategist, Social Entrepreneur (facilitator)
  4. Taking advantage of scholarship opportunities – Mr. Philip Obi,  Senior Sales & Commercial Manager @ General Electric, multi scholarship award winner for undergraduate and masters degree in USA (facilitator)

After the workshop, the participants are assigned mentors from diverse fields and professions, to guide them along their career paths.
