The Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), within the School of Business, Management and Economics at the University of Sussex, is seeking a Research Fellow to work on a project funded by the UK Department for International Development on understanding knowledge systems to promote science technology and innovation in East African countries.

About the Award:Â The Research Fellow will conduct data analysis, co-write publishable outputs with the PI and other Co-Is, and engage with relevant stakeholders for dissemination and impact.
They will mainly work on a work package that will measure the return on investment in science, technology and innovation in East African countries, offering an empirical accounting on the economic impact of investment in STI at various levels of aggregation from plant to macro-economy level to help direct future investment in STI.
They will work in close collaboration with colleagues at SPRU involved in the project, mainly under the supervision of Tommaso Ciarli and Joanna Chataway, and will also collaborate with the remaining areas and partners of the project, studying the measurement and mapping of the countries knowledge system and the political economy analysis.
The successful candidate will play a key role in data collection, and analysis, especially focusing on standard methods to estimate return to investment in the knowledge economy, and standard methods in scientometrics. They will also support/participate in project events.

Eligibility:Â
- The successful candidate will have a PhD in Economics or equivalent disciplines, with strong curricula on quantitative data analysis. They may have a background on literature and analysis of STI indicators, and the estimation of the economic (private and social) return to investment in STI.
- The ideal candidate will also have knowledge and experience on the collection and treatment of data from low and middle income countries. Experience with STI data in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) is an advantage.
- They will also have knowledge and experience in the collection and analysis of data on publications and patents (such as semantic analysis and network analysis).
