University of Oslo Doctoral and Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Multilingualism and Mediated Communication 2017/2018

Brief description: University of Oslo MultiLingual Department seeks to recruit one doctoral candidate and one postdoctoral candidate with excellent research qualifications who will work with members of the research project “Multilingualism and mediated communication”.

Eligible FieldS of Research: For each position, applicants are expected to present an independent research project proposal within one of the two following research areas:

1)      Media and linguistic repertoires in multilingual families
2)      Multilingualism in digital interaction

About the Award: One Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) and one Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) are available at the Center for Multilingualism in Society across the Lifespan (MultiLing) at the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies, University of Oslo, starting November 2016. The fellowships are funded by the University of Oslo’s investment in developing world-leading research communitiesand are part of one of MultiLing’s new research projects, “Multilingualism and mediated communication”.

The successful candidate is expected to become part of MultiLing’s research environment and contribute to its development. The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the relevant research areas addressed above, to contribute to and participate in the various workshops, conferences and activities organized by MultiLing, and to be an active member of the MultiLing team in Oslo.

For the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship there is a 10% duty component devoted to teaching or other qualifying work for MultiLing. The main purpose of postdoctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

  • For the Doctoral position, the candidate must have an MA degree or equivalent in Linguistics, Communication, Anthropology, or some other relevant discipline related to MultiLing’s work (note the requirement of a minimum 2-year MA or equivalent). For the Postdoctoral position, the candidate should have a PhD degree or equivalent in the same academic subjects. For the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, the doctoral dissertation must have been submitted for evaluation before the application deadline.
  • Both positions require good knowledge of methodology for the study of spoken and/or written interaction and the ability to carry out fieldwork involving relevant methods of data collection and analysis.
  • Excellent written and spoken language skills in English.
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position.

One or more of the following additional qualifications will be an advantage:

  • Experience with research on mediated language use, with focus on digital media.
  • Knowledge of at least one minority language used in Norway, such as Punjabi, Turkish, Arabic, or Polish.
  • Knowledge of Norwegian is an advantage, but not a requirement.

In the evaluation of the applications, emphasis will be placed on:

  • The project’s scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation
  • The applicant’s international experience and network
  • The applicant’s academic and personal qualifications to carry out the project within the allotted time frame
  • Good cooperative skills, and the ability to successfully join in academic collaboration within and across disciplines
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position.

Selection Criteria:

  • In the case of equally qualified applicants, an applicant proposing a project that addresses issues relevant for the multilingual situation in Norway will be given preference. Candidates with a minority language background relevant for the multilingual situation in Norway are encouraged to apply.
  • Special emphasis will be placed on the quality of the project description and its relevance for one of the two research areas noted above: “Media and linguistic repertoires in multilingual families” or “Multilingualism in digital interaction”.
  • For the Doctoral position, special emphasis will also be placed on the assumed academic and personal ability to complete the dissertation within the given time frame. For the Postdoctoral position, we seek strongly motivated, competent and internationally oriented candidates, with high-ranking academic qualifications in the relevant area of research.

  • PhD position: salary level 50-56 (NOK 430 500 – 475 400, depending on level of expertise)

Duration of Fellowship: The positions are available for a period of three years, starting November 1, 2016. For the doctoral position, the fellowship period may be reduced if the PhD candidate has previously been employed in a research fellowship position.
